Talking to the sun isn't that out of the ordinary. In next Saturday's poem (the one that leads into O'Hara's in the archive), it's John Donne who's talking to the sun. The most interesting thing in O'Hara's poem is that the sun talks back. :)

Is the Sun referring to John Donne, the other poet he spoke to?

No, he's referring to Vladimir Mayakovsky and his poem "An Extraordinary Adventure Which Befell Vladimir Mayakovksy In A Summer Cottage," in which the sun comes down from the sky and literally rolls into Mayakovksy's cottage to have tea. O'Hara name-checks Mayakovsky, so there's no question about that. That's not on my blog, but here's a link: https://www.huckgutman.com/blog-1/vladimir-mayakovsky-extraordinary-adventure

No, it's called the Beat Generation. Frank O'Hara definitely didn't consider himself a Beat poet. Look it up.

And you don't know what being a member of the Beat Generation meant, either. You've probably never even read any Frank O'Hara, have you, Pendragon? π

The Beat Generation followed on the heels of the Silent Generation and led to the Hippie/Counterculture Generation. It is a referential term that people use to refer to the overriding cultural force of a given time and place (in this case, America in the mid-to-late 1950s-early 1960s). "Kerouac introduced the phrase "Beat Generation" in 1948 to characterize a perceived underground, anti-conformist youth movement in New York." (Wikipedia) As you can see, the term initially described a "youth movement," not a literary one. Terms for the literary movement are "The Beat Movement," "The Beat School," and "Beat Poetry." No, understanding who the members of the Beat Generation were isn't that complicated. Frank O'Hara wasn't a Beat poet, for starters. π
