DOLPHINS NEWS: There are two rumors floating around Miami concerning possible trades for the Dolphins. The first, as reported in today's Miami Herald, is that the Dolphins may be interested in trading for defensive end Anthony Smith of the Raiders. Smith is an effective pass rusher, as is shown by his 49 sacks in 5 years, but has a reputation as being undependable and may not be able to adapt to the Dolphins' heavy workout schedule. Also, the Raiders will want a high draft pick for Smith and the Dolphins are unlikely to be willing to pay the price. The other rumor I have heard is from a personal source, who says that the Dolphins are also looking at a trade for a linebacker. Who that linebacker could be and what they would trade for him is a mystery, but apparently the Dolphins are looking hard for some defensive help. COMMENTS: The Dolphins could use some help in the pass-rushing department and that is what these trades would be about, if anything were to come to pass. The NFL trading deadline is next Tuesday, so anything that happens would have to happen by next week. What happens Sunday against the Seahawks could have a major effect on these possible trades. What I heard was either a #1 or a #2 and a player which both the Cards and Dolphins had rejected. Michael Bankston's name was also mentioned but I can't see the Cards trading him straight up for Smith, he's younger and better against the run. The Raiders are through with Smith, they've put him on the "Left List" which apparently allows them to fine him up to one week's salary, per week, while he's not getting paid, so he's actually not only losing 116K a week in pay, but he is being fined that amount by the team and could wind up owing them money if he were to sit out the season. Allegedly the rumor that started this whole thing was that McGlockton was being suggested by the Falcons for Jeff George, and somehow the rumor got to Smith's agent that it was Smith not McGlockton on the block. The Raiders emphatically deny they had been trying to trade Smith but at this point they've washed their hands of him. No idea if there was anything to the McGlockton rumors, NBC mentioned them last Sunday, I would think they could get a lot more than George for Chester. -- Russ Smith "We have too many historians and not enough innovators." ----Vince Tobin on the negative image of the Arizona Cardinals----

He is going to start Sean Wooden in his place. As far as the trades go, I certainly agree that the Dolphins need some help on the defensive line. I think that they have the future of their defense right in Zach Thomas' hands. Fellow Dolfan, Darren
