SI's All-Time Cowboys Team

In its Feb 7 special Cowboys Commemorative Issue ("A Season to
Remember"), SI selects its All-Time Cowboys Team (as selected by Paul
Zimmerman):

WR Bob Hayes 65-74 DE Harvey Martin 73-83
T Rayfield Wright 67-79 DT Bob Lilly 61-74
G Nate Newton 86- DT Randy White 75-88
C Mark Stepnoski 89-94 DE Charles Haley 92-
G John Niland 66-74 OLB Chuck Howley 61-73
T Erik Williams 91- MLB Lee Roy Jordan 63-76
TE Billy Joe DuPree 73-83 OLB Ken Norton 88-93
WR Michael Irvin 88- CB Mel Renfro 64-77
QB Roger Staubach 69-79 CB Deion Sanders 95-
RB Tony Dorsett 77-87 SS Cornell Green 62-74
RB Emmitt Smith 90- FS Cliff Harris 70-79

K Chris Boniol 94- PR Bob Hayes 65-74
P Sam Baker 62-63 Cvr Bill Bates 83-
KR Mel Renfro 64-77 Coach Tom Landry 60-88

I like the fact that Zimmerman gives some credit to the older players.
OTOH, how fair is it to name two HBs as RBs, completely overlooking
worthy All-Time FBs like Don Perkins??

And good as Deion is, is half a season enough to tag him an All-Time CB
to the exclusion of the likes of Everson Walls (led the NFL in INTs for
three years) and Kevin Smith?? Haley over Too Tall is a tough pick; and
no spots for Drew Pearson and Tony Hill?

Finally, there is an article comparing the current "Triplets" of Aikman,
Irvin and Smith to other NFL trios -- and concludes the performances of
the current Triplets are unequaled in NFL history (avg yds per season;
Browns includes AAFC numbers):

Years Team QB RB WR Reg Sea Post Titles
===== ======     ======   ======   =======   =======  ====  ======
46-53 Browns Graham Motley Lavelli 87-12-3 6-3 5
                  2,471 589 606 .868 .667

56-67 Colts Unitas Moore Berry 101-54-3 2-2 2
                  2,752 431 756 .649 .500

70-74 Dolphins Griese Csonka Warfield 57-12-1 8-3 2
                  1,627 959 671 .821 .727

74-82 Steelers Bradshaw Harris Swann 90-38-1 13-3 4
                  2,353 1,021 607 .702 .813

85-90 49ers Montana Craig Rice 71-23-1 7-4 2
                  3,232 948 1,311 .753 .636

90-95 Cowboys Aikman Smith Irvin 67-29-0 11-2 3
                  2,976 1,493 1,251 .698 .846

Even with these numbers, Peter King concludes the Cowboys Triplets are
second in all-time greatness to the Browns' trio of the 40s-50s, because
they led the Browns to eight straight title games, and five titles
outright (of course, four of those were in the AAFC!!).

I would also go with Walls and Septien. I would also prefer Aikman to
Staubach IN TODAY'S LEAGUE because of Aikman's superior physical
strength. They both had histories of concussions and other injuries, but
I don't think Staubach would be able to handle the pounding of these 300+
pound behemoths of today. Aikman has to outweigh the Dodger by 40
pounds.

I agree with most, but not all. Sanders at CB? He's played a half-season.
What about Walls or Waters (I know he was primarily a Safety, but I think he
played CB for a while)? We also can't forget Dennis Thurman.

I would also replace Stepnowski with Rafferty, Boniol with Septien and Norton
with D.D. Lewis. And, I have a hard time choosing between Harvey Martin and
Too Tall Jones. Thankfully, they were playing together in reality.

Yes, Waters played CB for a while. That's why he played safety. 8-) My
most vivid memory of Waters at CB was a game against the Rams in which
Harold Jackson caught what seemed like 19 TD passes. Waters spent most
of the day reading the back of Jackson's jersey. 8-(

Leaving out Drew Pearson at WR is a tough one.

At RB, Dorsett and Smith is kind of a cop-out, since in real life you
would have a FB. So leaving aside whether you would take Dorsett or
Smith (I would probably take Dorsett because of his speed), who would
you put at FB? Darrell Johnston, Don Perkins, or Robert Newhouse (just
to spite the memory of Howard Cosell)?

In the might-have-been category, Thomas Henderson at his best was a
good OLB and Cvr.

I would take Too Tall Jones over Haley. Jones, Martin, Lilly, White.

Tony Fritsch should be the K just for that onsides kick he did against
the 49ers. 8-)

The choice at punter is ridiculous. How can they leave out Danny
White, "America's Punter". 8-) He couldn't kick as far as most, but he
was excellent at hitting the coffin corner and always a threat to run
for a 1st down. Does anybody remember that cool play where he ran past
the line of scrimmage and then punted?

They left out a couple of important positions. Who would you take as
all-time Cowboy owner? General Manager? 8-)

I do indeed. As I remember, that was in the post-Stauback days when
White was doing dual duty as QB/punter. That would be another reason to
sign Danny as the punter: you'd also get a super backup QB.

Put Walls, Septien, Aikman in. One more: "Hollywood" Henderson instead of
Norton.

I certainly agree that Sanders does not belong on the all time Cowboys team,
yet. I would put Herb Adderly there for now.

Coach? I'd still have to go with Tom Landry. He created the Dallas Dynasty, and
kept the Cowboys great for decades. Yes, it was paast time for Tom go when he
did, but when yoou consider his innovations to the game, and his longevity,
Landry is the only choice. (Does anybody remember when Landry re-introduced the
shotgun to the NFL, and everybody laughed? After the Cowboys went to the Super
Bowl with it, everybody was using it.)

Aikman/Staubach - Staubach/Aikman How in the hell do you choose between a
legend, and a legend in the making? Hall of Fame vs. future Hall of Fame. If
you just look at numbers alone, Aikman has Staubach beaten. But that's the real
problem: People always thought that they had Staubach beaten, but he kept
coming back and winning. Some how, some way, Roger the Dodger figured out a way
to win. My head says Troy, my heart says Roger. Who would you want starting in
the Super Bowl? I would say Troy. But who would you want with two minutes left
in the Super Bowl, and the Cowboys have the ball on their own 20 yard line, and
are down by four points? I'd say Roger. I guess for now, I'd have to go with my
heart, and my second childhood hero, (my first being Bob Lilly), and go with
Roger, because in a few years, with all of his numbers, Troy would be an easy
pick.
