Local businesses paid to have advertisements and listings in it. People picked one up, leafed through it looking for coupons or a crossword puzzle, decided what restaurant, cineplex or bar to go to, and tossed them in the nearest garbage pail. The publishers boast a 10K circulation, based on the false assumption that the copies they dump off in the local laundromat are going to be read. This somewhat inflated number is used when selling ad space. In short, it's a glorified flyer. Even small press magazines with a 200 print run are preferable, as they will actually be read by others with an interest in poetry.

Quite a bit so, although the origin was similar: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_Loafing_(Atlanta) "Creative Loafing is a U.S. city monthly paper serving the Atlanta metropolitan area covering local news, politics, arts, entertainment, food, music and events..."

I was involved in small press myself, and edited a poetry and art zine for years (which was listed in Poet's Market during the mid-1990s), so I know that scene well, also. >> My poetry and stories that appeared in various small press publications were read by 100s (perhaps 1,000s) of my fellow writers. > >> My poetry and column was published monthly at 10,000 copies per issue for nearly twenty years. >> >> In other words, I topped your lifetime circulation in one month. > But no one read your column You wish. I know for a fact that they did, you shit slinging little monkey. > The point is that it doesn't matter how many copies of your poem are circulated 10,000 copies every month for nearly twenty years, you wish you could have had that reach. Curb your jealousy, Pendragon. > Having your poem read by 10 of your fellow writers is far more significant than More significant than having a monthly audience of 10,000 monthly readers? That's debatable, of course. > Mickey Rourke would have played you in a movie (or, perhaps Avery Schreiber). "Barfly" was a great movie, even though Bukowski didn't like it.
