I an interested in getting a phone line which will give me about 25p per min
and can play recorded messages (ie: Press 1 to be connected to an operator,
press 2 to hear a recodring of the latest news etc).
How can I go about getting one of these phone lines?

If you go to www.icstis.org.uk you can find all the information and rules and
regulations regarding setting up one of these lines, including a list of network
operators who can offer you service. Incidently, we are one of those network
operators, so drop me an email if you'd like.

Linus will sort you out i'm sure, or try www.blackboxtelecom.co.uk and
various others - inweb for example.

You need to clarify if you want 25ppm back from your lines or if you want
the caller to be charged 25ppm (in which case you'd prob get between 10-15p
ish back, depending on the facilities you need)

The only examples I can think of where it is reasonable:

1) Getting telephone support where no support contract has been paid for
   up front,

2) An operation like Telediscount who use the money to pay for routing
international calls at rates still sometimes cheaper than
   direct-dialling or other carriers.

So you want to alienate all your existing customers and deter new ones..?

Premium rate is a rip-off, nothing more, nothing less.

i can think of one large hosting company (xcalibre) who use premium rate for
their technical support as a fast track to their very good email support -
if you read the customer forums at http://forum.xcalibre.co.uk and look back
for older messages, you'll see the PRS lines weren't originally welcomed by
all, but now people see it as being quote good value.

if nobody liked or used PRS, there wouldn't be any prs providers.... and
there are plenty!

Come off it, tell me someone who *likes* them, apart from those getting
the rake-off. As for usage, they are used because for many applications
there is now no alternative.Think about it; before premium rate came into
existence, people managed perfectly well, tech support and similar
helplines existed and presumably worked ok. Premium rate was seen as a
route to easy money, nothing more.

If you value your customers that much offer them tech support on a normal
rate or freephone line, that way you may even attract customers, even if
the phone line is technically run at a loss.

I personally would not ring a premium rate number unless my life depended
on it, and even then I'd be watching the clock..!
