I want to add some sound proofing of my engine on a nb cruiser. I have
seen what looks like a fairly thin silver flexible sheets stapled onto
the underside of the engine cover boards on some nbs, but can't find
anything on google seaches. I am totally useless at DIY, so any fix
more complicated than hammering in a few nails will probably be beyond
me. Anyone out there able to point me in the right direction?

Thanks
Derek

Rockwool is one of the best materials, but needs 'containing'. It is
fireproof and meets safety requirements.

We used to use ali panels 3' X 4' X 1" with one face made of
perforated ali facing the sound area and the Rockwool behind the perf.
1" to 1.5" is fine for most diesels, but bear in mind that sound
carries along in the airstream from the cooling system.

I used white fabric faced acoustic insulation with a synthetic lead layer in
it from TW Marine. This comes in a variety of types and thickness and some
are available as self adhesive. The face is far more damage resistant than
the types I have seen in general chandlers.

Please remember you have to stop the sound bouncing and echoing around the
engine bay, so either you use an awful lot of sound proofing or you box the
engine and soundproof the inner faces of the box. I made my box out of 12mm
WBP hardwood ply. It is also vital that you ensure you leave the equivalent
of 2 x 150mm diameter breather holes in the box for engine combustion air
for a 1500 cc engine and pro rata. You stop the sound leaking out of the
holes by providing baffles.

It would appear that it is always the very last bit of insulation that makes
the most difference.

If this boat has an air-cooled Lister in it I think I would advise you not
to spend too much time or money on it because the cooling air requirements
are such that it will be difficult to do much with.

What made a fair difference on mine was using closed cell, self adhesive,
foam tape (sometimes known as hatch tape) to seal the joint where the
cruiser stern deck boards sit on the support framing (ensuring you have
enough engine air).

If you want a look and listen and can get to the South Midlands please email
me off group (email address on website below).

On my 25' Spirecraft which was already stern heavy I covered
everything in sight round the engine with 3Ms Thinsulate as supplied
by Reading Marine. It made a tremendous difference and it's only 25mm
or so thick. However, it was rather heavy on the wallet!

Many thanks to everyone above. Lots of useful information here, not to
mention a project for Spring.

I was in Oundle Marina yesterday buying most of the chandlery up, and
whilst browsing the shelves I saw some foil-encased insulation
material. I wondered what it was for! Oundle is on 01832 282862, Mark
Nye the guvnor is a bit of an expert on boats of all kinds. Though I'm
sure it is available elsewhere too.

Can we expect an answer from you sometime soon - or is this supposed to
be a quiz question?

Quiz? No, it was rhetorical!
