Canal Lighthouse!

Was just listening to Home Truths on Radio Four this morning, (lying in bed
as it was murky and wet outside!) when a chap who lives on a narrowboat on
the Bridgewater Canal was being interviewed. He bought the land next to his
mooring and built a 30ft lighthouse. According to him it is on a bend and
just looks like a conventional coastal lighthouse. He even phoned Fred
Dibnah who was on the phone for over half an hour with helpful hints on how
to build it. The lamp was from one of the old lightships. Our friend can
even sit on top of it in a small room. Sounds completely nutty, as he should
be bless him. He claims that it is the only manned lighthouse still in
Britain as all the rest are now automatic.!

Agreed - lighthouses are usually picturesque - this one leaves a lot to be
desired.

I dunno if it is a London thing, but round here there are a lot of new
Sureguard storage units that have a fake lighthouse at the entrance.

The classic canal lighthouse is at Ellesmere Port

Locally at one end of a large lake, that was once linked to the sea,
there was what I think was an old brick white painted lighthouse
tower. Somebody has bought it stripped off all the paint & had the
bricks cleaned so that they look like new. Now it looks like a WWII
airfield water tower, all that's missing is a bit of ancient
camouflage paint.

Well I think it's rather good. We need a bit of humour in architecture
from time to time. It's doing no harm at Monton, which is not the most
salubrious of places.

Martin's picture was taken before the building was completed. It
doesn't have a blue cover now.

Good luck to the fellah.

Agree with David. There are so many neat little neo Georgian box like houses
appearing along the canals, all looking the same that it is refreshing to
see something different. I don't think it looks all that bad either, mind
you I would rather have seen nothing!

The owner probably saw a few moored boats (Braunston puddlebanks perhaps?)
and thought a blue 'tarp' was a traditional form of canal roof decoration...

Dunno - I haven't been out to check them. It hasn't actually rained all
that much around here in the past few days - just a few showers. It
usually takes a long period of prolonged rain to have a significant
impact on some of the reservoirs.

Whilst on the subject of inland Lighthouses. There is a rather prominent one
standing high on an escarpment near to the Crich Tramway Museum in
Derbyshire. I understand that it was built as a memorial to a British Army
regiment after the First World War. These facts could be inaccurate,
nevertheless it is a big high standing lighthouse, and looks very authentic
as it slowly flashes away at night and can be seen for miles around.

Some years ago, I was driving back from London, coming off the M1 near
Alfreton and cutting across through Crich and Matlock to Macclesfield. It
was a clear night, I was tired and was having to put up with a tedious
rather pompous, know it all passenger. One of those who, wherever you have
been, he has been and is an expert on the place and has wined and dined at
the best hotel, in fact he was an expert on virtually everything and had
been everywhere and done everything. In fact, David Dickinson who has just
appeared in the 'I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here' program reminded me of
him although to be kind to David, this man was far worse!

As we drove past Crich down towards Cromford, the road seems to run along
the side of a high ridge with the land dropping away to the left, which was
covered in a low mist which looked like the sea. At the end of the ridge
there is a promontory sticking out like a headland and on top of this is the
lighthouse flashing away. This passenger, who was not used to the route, as
he would have come straight up the M6, and kept on telling so, as he was
eager to get home, suddenly shouted. 'For fucks sake Roger which way are we
going? We're on the bloody coast!' 'Oh,' I said, 'So we are, but it's a nice
way along the coast.' It ended up with a slanging match with him accusing me
of not knowing were I was going and driving miles out of our way. The
wonderful thing was that it completely disoriented him and for once he didn't
know where he was. He just could not figure out how the coast could be so
close to where we were. I said it was the eastern end of the Mersey Estuary
but he couldn't understand how we could have got so far west without
crossing the M6. We have rarely spoken since. . Forgive the F word but that
was how it was and what he said.

I went round the lighthouse (and the adjacent Vic56 steamer when it was
open as part of London Open House weekend back in September (It was
actually a Trinity House training lighthouse)

I beleive that you can go round it by appointment (Its doesn't take
long), will try and find the information sheet on it for the details

BTW the tower also contains and 'audio experience' in the Faraday
workshiop which is best missed.

Roger,

Is this the view you mean:

http://www.simondawson.com/dervall.jpg

you very evocatively brought back the view from my bedroom window (until I
moved to London a few years back). It was over the valley of the Derbyshire
Derwent, and the low clouds in the valley were quite common late in the
evening.

The memorial you mentioned is to the Sherwood Foresters. I never knew it had
a light on top.

It was built as the War Memorial to the Sherwood Foresters - see

a proper rotating beacon, but now merely has a flashing light - not
nearly so dramatic!

Yes David, your photograph clearly shows the valley and how it looked. It
was a clear night and I think the moon was shining. The clouds in the valley
seemed to be a luminous silver and looked like a calm sea in a wide estuary
on a moonlight night. The dark headland jutting out into this silver sea,
especially with a flashing lighthouse on top set the scene, and a situation
I couldn't resist. My passenger had been intermittently dozing off and to be
fair I did promp him a little by waking him up and asking him if he knew
which lighthouse it was as he was such a clever bugger at knowing
everywhere. It didn't help the situation as he wanted to be home early and
didn't agree with my route especially as I have a reputation of taking
meandering scenic routes and always arriving late. Thanks for the sight of
the photograph.

Roger.

A TV science program said that Faraday was lucky to survive his
experiment of flying a kite in a thunderstorm. The next three who
tried it were all electrocuted.

I'm not at all surprised that Faraday was unharmed by the experiment,
since he was not born until nearly 40 years after Benjamin Franklin took
a kite out into the storm. I *am* surprised that a TV science programme
could talk such tosh.

According to the following website the lighthouse is open each weekend,
might be worth checking though.

I have known the Memorial for years, but it was only about
a year or so ago that we were heading towards Buxton from Ripley
(past the site of Butterley tunnel, to keep on topic)
and I noticed the lighthouse was flashing for the first time!
While not very surprised because of the design, despite passing
that way in evening many times that was the only occasion that
I have seen the lamp in action.

Sadly, I am no longer surprised at the tosh talked in 'Science' programs.
Franklin WAS lucky - there were several fatalities amongst kite flyers,
and it remains an unhealthy pursuit if an electrical storm is around.

As a child, I lived where the light from Crich Stand was just visible.
It certainly used to rotate. It's sad if it's just a flashing light
now.
