Excuse the overkill, but I couldn't let go of the damn thing, it seems.
Store opening pics tagged on the end.

Funny captions to come. ;-)

Great shot! Works so much better as B&W (and no I haven't seen the
colour version so I'm assuming okay?)

A few of them were b&w originally, but yes, that one was colour. That
one was fine in colour, but changing to b&w can really rescue a picture.
:-)

And I only realised after the store opening that the thing was set to
ISO 400, hence the graininess.

Incidentally, is it always easy to tell if a picture was originally in
colour but has been changed to b&w?

Dunno - I just assumed because I didn't know in my ignorance that the
ol' Ixus will do B&W. You're way ahead of me in exploring its
capabilities.

Really? But that's the most fun bit of the function menu of all! 'Vivid'
is one of my faves - to be used with care though...

it shouldn't really be possible at all, though i guess it depends how
you do it. you can do on the camera or in photoshop/graphic converter or
iphoto etc...

i think it used to be practice for press photographers to shoot with
colour film and print any in black and white if they wanted to.

Why? Martin was just having a whip round.[1]

[1] Is "a whip round" an English expression, meaning collecting for a
charity or workmate's birthday etc? Sometimes I can't remember if
phrases are from here or the other side of the world.

Well, as someone who has seen a lot of bad photos of the Angel I was

I'd say 25%. Sab looks mean.
Flavio looks like he's just about to help a confused tourist find their

in 1938. Unhappy but very stylish.

I mean after the picture's been taken (ie in Pshop or GC) - I've noticed
pics taken originally in b&w are sharper, and sharper than the same
picture taken in colour.

i can't say i'd noticed that but i don't use photoshop much, and i tend
to think in colour, as you where, my thing is light and the colour there
in, and i used to love playing with night time shots which mean long
expoire times and mean colour shifts which is fun! i need suger mamma
so i can get a digital SLR which would alow me to play with such stuff.

makes sence as it would prob be quicker to get colour developed, and
gives them the choice... though it would be all digital now i'd guess.

I'd agree with that.

I'm doing Photography at college (only for 4 weeks thanfully - I shall
be reverting to video production in the new year) and it's all B&W.

I HATE B&W - so I'm taking all of the digital pics in colour and
converting them. We have to do half of our work on film, and those
pictures (often of the same shot) are that much 'clearer' than the
coverted colours pics - i.e the blacks are darker, and the whites just,
well 'more' white.

I also need a sugar parent, for digital SLR, camcorder, latpop. Shall we
look together? ;-)

Do a lot of press photographers use digital now?

Interest - what's the course called?

Why do you hate black and white? Colour can, at worst, add a whole bunch
of problems.

I believe most do. Not necessarily for feature stuff, but for press
work, breaking stories, it's *so* much faster up to the editor and onto
the page.

I would expect you could get very similar results by using Photoshop's
Channel Mixer for the colour to bw conversion. Most users tend to simply
select Image -> Mode -> Greyscale which does a poor, one-size-fits-all
conversion.

The Channel Mixer kind of allows you to "take the picture again" in bw
offering possibilities similar to using colour filters with bw film.

Well you look nothing like your virtual self.
Younger, and fewer neckties, for a start.

Heh. You need to tread the path of post-photographic purging. My
'albums' tend to be anywhere between 10% and 50% of the photos I
actually took.

Coolio.

Yes, but you've now succeeded in ruining the joke.

Oh, you guessed right. That photo was taken at a Lazies convention. It
is a bit like Fluffies [1] except that we all dress up as lazy
31-year-old under-achieving graphic designers.

By day I'm a 45 year-old commodity broker.
