Whilst wary of selling hardware, I've been asked this question so much recently that I'm thinking of stocking a basic 10/100 PCI NIC which will be guaranteed as Linux compatible. I'm in the process of sorting out sources. Cost would be about 12 GBP, inclusive of delivery and VAT. Would there be any interest in this? John -- John Winters. Wallingford, Oxon, England. Unfortunately it's not immediately obvious whether a cheap card is compatible - they're branded by their obscure manufacturers, whereas what you need to know is which chip it uses. In practice, most cards will be supported. If in doubt, go for something with a Realtek 8029 (lots of generic 10Mbit cards use them). The RTL8029s definitely work fine - two such cards have been running our internet gateway glitch free, 24/7, for about the last 6 months. -- John G Ineson

And for 12GPB you can't go wrong. It is in fact a shame that there is not a proper UK based specialist Linux compatible hardware supplier for such devils as webcams, scanners, and other devices that can cause headaches. btw: Ian, I have a fond liking for DLink cards (cheap and easy). Netgear seems to be becoming popular (the FA311 or something), but I've seen quite a few posts about problems setting them up. I must admit that my friend also has one and it did take some messing about to get it working because of the lack of correct documentation (well, at least it did come with a driver module).

Not now, but I would have been intested a couple of weeks ago when I was buggering around trying to get a couple of NetGear cards working. Probably in future if I buy any more machines cheers Phil -- Philip W. Britton PrismTech Ltd, UK. Tel +44 191 497 9914 http://www.prismtechnologies.com
