Thu, Feb. 10

1837 - Alexander Pushkin, Russian poet and novelist, killed in a duel.
Regarded as Russia's greatest poet, his works include the historical
tragedy "Boris Godunov".

1890 - Boris Pasternak, Russian author of "Dr Zhivago", was born.

1991 - Lithuanians voted overwhelmingly for independence from the Soviet
Union. Parliament had already declared independence in March 1990.

1996 - Voters in a referendum in the Central Asian state of Kyrgyzstan
approved proposals to grant extra powers to reformist President Askar
Akayev.
