Silicon Valley SIGGRAPH
April Meeting

"Live Graphics"
Tim Heidmann
tph@jup.esd.sgi.com

Abstract ---
The computer animation which today's general purpose graphics
workstations can generate in real time is of such high quality that
it can be used for live television broadcast.

The software requirements for designing and producing those graphics,
however, go far beyond what is available in existing modeling and
animation applications.

Tim Heidmann will talk about approaches to the use of live computer
animation, issues in software design, and problems that arise in a
live broadcast environment.

As a real-life example, he will demonstrate "SailTrack", software
written for the most recent America's Cup international sailing
competition, which used telemetry from GPS satellite receivers aboard
the boats to create a live, animated 2D and 3D virtual-reality view
of the race for ESPN.

Biography ---
Tim Heidmann is a graphics software engineer with Silicon Graphics,
where he manages special projects in animation, entertainment, and
digital media. Before joining SGI, he worked in Hollywood developing
animation software and producing special effects for use in
commercials, film, and animated cartoons. He received his BSE in
Computer Science from Princeton University in 1980.
