Apparantly a British tabloid has stated that because Bath won all the rucks and mauls and scored a couple of pushover tries that Union is a far better game than League. How come Wigan scored two of the best tries in English Rugby for a long time and did win the League by 76 points while only lost the Rugby by 25. It seems to me that the press are anti League. If the English Rugby team had Rugby forwards and a League backline not only would they win more games but maybe play attractive Rugby that the public want to see.

It would also need to be RL Halfbacks as well - to use the backs you need someone who will give them the ball! Paul

This last message from kop@netaccess.co.nz has been posted by myself onto the newsgroup known as rec.sport.rugby.union It should be interesting to see what (if any) replies I get. If I get anything worth posting on here, I will. Why not use the bandwidth to talk about Rugby? Also if you actually bothered to follow r.s.r.u you'd pretty soon discover that like *most* of the discussions of cross-code on this group its pretty sensible, and fair minded. Cross-posted to rec.sport.rugby.league Why do some people posting to rec.sport.rugby.union have this fascination with drawing comparisons with Rugby League? Bill Taylor (mathwft@math.canterbury.ac.nz) wrote: : thigham@waikato.ac.nz (Tom Higham) writes: : |> The State of Origin series was something I looked forward to : |> each year but in the wake of Super-12 its time has clearly come. : |> Stop-start, rumble it up, tackle, 6 times, kick it. ... Predictable. : Interesting! My son said almost exactly the same thing, and he is (was) quite : a fan. (For myself, I've never been avble to watch the stupid game.) Well the weight of evidence is clearly building in your favour. I would say you only need a few more 'me too's and it becomes established fact. : I tend to agree with all those saying that league is being shunted aside : in popularity, (especially chronic here where the Orcland Warriors are : turning out to be the Dorkland Horrors). Lets have some facts here please. Give me attendance figures or viewing figures; not just hear-say. : It won't disappear, Rugby League will never disappear - even if the administrators bow to media pressure and merge with Union they will force a split with the vast majority of British amateur Rugby League clubs and a significant number of British professional Rugby League clubs and a large number of people will still watch it even if a far greater number watch something else. I guess the same may be true outside of England. : though; what : is bound to happen is that even more media-mogul pressure goes onto them to : tart up the game with a massive rule-tweak. /\ Interestingly in the sentence above it's implied that 'rule-tweak' = bad whereas in the one below the implication is that 'rule-tweak' = good. \/ : And on the subject of tweaking the rules, I think the latest pottle of union : tweaks is great, as I said before. In spite of the moaning minnies, it has [snipped something that actually was on topis for r.s.r.union] : |> 2-3 tries is a try fest is league. : Yes indeed. Or maybe not. Never harms to look at the facts I say. It is quite possible that more tries are scored per match in Super 12 than in the Winfield/Optus cup. However looking at last season's 'European Superleague' ignoring all Cup matches then 954 tries were scored in 110 matches. What are the comparable figures for Super 12 or the Optus Cup? As Terry Fiztpatrick (a Union supporter if I'm not mistaken) wrote about 4 or 5 articles back in this thread League tends to be higher scoring than Union. Of course he was generalising form the Northern Hemisphere and you are generalising from the Southern Hemisphere. [snip] : > It is a different game, one where : > contunuity and flow are vital to the ability to score points. You have the : > ball, you MUST retain it and you must score points when you have it. : > ... Scotland shared this philosophy and were rewarded with points. : Exactly! Very well put. I wonder did you watch Wigan playing Rugby Union? [snip] : However; here in StAlbans, Christchurch, we are die-hard conspiracy : theorists. Contrary to popular belief Murdoch *does* love the union game, : and has cleverly found a diabolically ingenious way to kill off league... I reckon you lot planted Maurice Lindsay as a sleeper many years ago and activated him sometime last year. He won't be able to suppress his rich plummy home counties accent under that nasal northern whine much longer. I kid you not John

Clearly 30000 Queenslanders thought it was the cats pyjamas as a game, some of us thought that up until the last 2 minutes it was very boring, but then we've been spoilt by non-stop action, fluid running and tries of late. Just opinion I think. > > : I tend to agree with all those saying that league is being shunted aside > : in popularity, (especially chronic here where the Orcland Warriors are > : turning out to be the Dorkland Horrors). > > Lets have some facts here please. This is a classic response on Usenet, if someone ventures a view which is the opposite of the posters, they just demand figures, references, examples, come on, come on!!! Now !!!! I think figures would be available for the home games of the Warriors this year and compared with last year, they are apparently down. But, John, you're right, I don't have the exact figures. I don't know about Bill, maybe he'll surprise me! Anyway, my analysis is based on complete objectivity: ----Scanning the stadium during matches to see how many empty seats there are! (always a good indicator!). ----Listening to the radio talk back to hear how many league supporters are on saying "Screw the warriors, they're losers, I've sent back my season ticket! And so have 3 of my best mates"! ----Hearing commentators saying the attendances have been down this year (probably my most objective method to date!). I over did the sarcasm somewhat - a hangover from another post. You are welcome to your opinion. : > : I tend to agree with all those saying that league is being shunted aside : > : in popularity, (especially chronic here where the Orcland Warriors are : > : turning out to be the Dorkland Horrors). : > : > Lets have some facts here please. Now !!!! Yes indeed. Does that make it wrong? Are facts unimportant? : I think figures would be available : for the home games of the Warriors this year From 5 home games average is 20,597 : and compared with last year, they are apparently down. I don't have the figures but don't dispute that given the current bad press re. ARL v. Superleague. However what I feel needs to be justified is Bill's assertion that 'league is being shunted aside in popularity'. Your examples have some objectivity but they relate to the decreasing attendence, not to the relative performance of the Warriors versus something else.
