Mario for Lindros? (Wild rumour from Winnipeg)

Don't flame me; this came from my brother in Winnipeg. Rumours two
weeks ago emerged on The Hockey News' TSN show (or is it syndicated?)
that the Penguins might move Le Grand Mario to the Nordiques to get
Eric Lindros. This transaction would not happen until the entry draft
to see how Lemieux fares the rest of the season, it was said.

Unloading Mario's salary would allow them to sign the Option Line,
with Lindros lightening the financial load for a couple of years until
he talks big money. This all came about before the Compuware talk,
and have since subsided. I'm not taking this too seriously, okay?

That rumor hit the Pgh. papers a few weeks ago. GM Craig Patrick blew it off.

I can see that if Lemieux couldn't return to form after surgery, the Pens
would want to unload him. But Lemieux has performed better than anyone
expected.

The Option line is another story. Cullen has turned ice cold. Stevens'
production is also down. Recchi is the only player still doing well.
I'm sure that the fact the Option doesn't play together as often (since
Lemieux's return) has something to do with it.

That's the silliest rumour I've heard since the "Gretzky to LA" rumours of
a couple of years ago.
