 The first major match of the season was washed out
after little more than 33 overs. The Mercantile
Mutual Cup between Queensland started in overcaste
conditions and the new Brisbane lights were soon
switched on. Also switched on were the Queensland
batsmen who pounded a Victorian bowling lineup
struggling in the wet conditions. Hayden a controlled
57 and Law a free scoring 72 when the first major
break for the rain occured. This last the equivalent
of 10 overs and the match was reduced to 45 overs.

 After the restart, Law was brilliantly run out
by Matthew Elliot. New Wunderking of no-known abode
at this time Andrew Symonds was smartly stumped off
medium pacer Harvey falling forward trying to glance
a full delivery down hte leg side. Martin Love followed
shortly striking a ball straight to Dean Jones off
Shane Waren, and even more shortly after that the rain
re-occured and continued throughout the rest of the day
forcing the abandonment of the game.

 Both sides recieve one point from this game, and therefore
assume equal leadership of the table after one competition
match.

 The next games are on Sunday 15 October when New South Wales
take on Queensland at the North Sydney Oval and Western Australia
take on Tasmania at the WACA. The first Shield game starts the
following Wednesday. Pakistan play their first game in Australia
on the 26th.
