What do you guys (and girls) think about MxPx?

I don't have that much info about them. I have some friends that say they
sold out.
But I'm not sure, they stilll appear to be Christians. ????????????????????

Yada Yada Yada...here goes the whole "selling out" ordeal again...and if anyone
mentions Amy Grant's name...well...just leave 'em be! We all should be glad
that they are now able to reach a broader audience in the mainstream because we
all know that Christian artists rarely get much exposure in the mainstream.
Surprised I haven't heared that "Sixpence None the Richer has sold out!".

First you have to define what selling out is.

I figure there is no such thing, for the following reaons...

The music industry, ANY music industry, knows how to reach the widest
possible denomination possible. If they think your band can do that, they'll
sign you. You will probably fail, but they'll pay you to succeed as well
as you can, and maybe make money for them, which is their ultimate goal.
Bottom line: You have to have money to make money... you have to have money
to make money in the music business. Why don't a lot of great punk bands
make lots of money? They don't have the money to reach a large audience.
The record company has that money, though. They give you money, you sign
a contract for your soul, basically.

(About the making money with money bit... you have to spend money for gear,
for good recording techs, studio time, artwork, CD burning and distribution,
advertising (!!!!), touring, all that stuff... someone with a couple thou
just can't get the big-time exposure for free... even WITH the internet...)

Many musicians are able to negotiate this and still produce viable music...
I suggest listening to Tool, Fear Factory, Everclear, etc. as examples.

Some are not able to negotiate the maze, and simply try and make music to
please the masses ; Sugar Ray, etc.

I suppose 'selling out' is the second. But then again, I've heard it more
as an epithet to anyone who is successful.

Now where does Christianity come into this, anyways?

Got me, there. You can 'sell out' and be Christian, there was a thread a
while back about successful Christian artists.

I've always held the opinion that no music is bad unless it wears cowboy
boots, that's why I'm even bloody in this newsgroup, to find some good
'Xtian' music.

Sadly, as I continue to sort through the rip-offs and derivatory work,
all that glitters is not gold.

So what _do_ you like? All we've heard from you so far is how
EVERYTHING you've ever heard sucks.

Dan,

I actually think you've got a legitimate question. First, my qualifications
for answering this question. I am a huge MxPx fan. In October of 96 I blew a
thousand dollars Canadian ($50 US) on putting on a MxPx show. I've worked
the past 7 and a half years for a very large corporation. Currently on a one
year leave of absence. Every day you are asked to sell out your soul. To
lie, compromise, work half-hearted and half thinking. Have I sold out for a
pay cheque. To some extent, yes. Have I been much of a Christian witness at
work? Not really.

Now, Reese Roper (lead singer from Five Iron Frenzy), at least tongue in
cheek, believes MxPx has sold out. I don't believe it. BUT that's for you to
decide. You've got to ask yourself, what constitutes a sell out? If being in
the music business causes you to compromise your faith and your own
individual mission in life in any way, well you are on the road to a sell
out, IMHO. I think there is a spectrum of selling out. For my money, Amy
Grant and Sandi Patti are bigger sell outs than MxPx.

Talking to the band members and the road crew in 96 and since doesn't lead
me to believe that Mike, Yuri, and Tom have travelled too far down the sell
out road. Examine their witness and make up your own mind. Be careful
though. Due to the constant barrage of this sell out question they will
pretend to be bad boys. If you come at them, doubting their motives, they
find it a big joke to try and confirm all your misconceptions.

If your parents or your pastor think that Christian punk is of the devil
don't ever take them to a MxPx show. If you've got a punk friend who's not
saved, definitely take them and try to meet the boys.

They did call it quits, but now they're going to put out a new record
through BEC.

I liked their first two albums, just the third one didn't set right with
me. Too mainstream pop for me. Don't know if that makes sense or not
really...

That's funny... you talk about how most Christian music sucks and then you admit to
liking Aqua. Please.
