Wow, when they were talking about people who played with Art Blakey,
they really held that shot of Wynton Marsalis longer and much more
intensely then the others, or is that my imagination??

I think this is certainly a "focused" thought on episode 9.

No question they did - a series of black and white photos (please don't say
that's all that was available) a list of names, then, a dramatic pause, "
and.... Wynton Marsalis!" cut to colour photo and hold - then cut to Wynton.
Not that there's anything wrong with Black and white images - it was the
contrast that jumper off the screen.

The fact that Wayne Shorter, for example, was mentioned in the list but not
interviewed seemed like a poor choice. After all, Shorter's stature in jazz
history - both as a composer and performer - is considerable.

During the segment on Miles Davis, my heart was fluttering, my head was
light, and I found I had dancing feet. Is it because Bill Evans was
actually mentioned? No. Was it because the music was music I grew up
with? No. Then I looked at the clock on the VCR and realised it had
been a full 25 minutes since Wynton last injected his comments.

While I don't have anything against W.M., I'd have to say that the
documentary actually DID flow along nicer when you don't have the same
person (from the past 8 episodes) injecting his comments into every
nook of the narrative.

Miles, wherever you are, I was smiling.

ps. don't you just love those countrified gingham shirts coltrane was
wearing in the background! :-)

Enough to make me literally stamp the floor. Plus, it was in color, which
set it off from the rest. It was dripping with reverence as though none of
the others deserved it.

don't forget the dramatic pause beforehand ... I was

Incidentally, I thought that the little story that WM told (secondhand)
about Art Blakey was a riot, and was one of the few times I felt like I
was getting some of the personal insight that all the other musicians
in the film were contributing (as opposed to a lecture).

I noticed that too. Not only did they hold it longer, and at the end,
but they also gave his photo more color saturation to make it stand out.

More than saturation - all of the other photos were black and white.
Wynton's was the only colour photo - following the pregnant pause "and....
Wynton Marsalis"...

I got the feeling that even Wynton doubted the veracity of that story.
I have no doubt that Wynton could say *anything* and Ken Burns would film it.

I was entertained more by Wynton's deadpanned impersonation of Blakey,
which seemed to me to be right on...

As for Burns filming Wynton saying anything, well, that's typically how
these things are made, aren't they? Unless you're referring to the
editing.

I meant that he would film Wynton saying anything regardless of the content.
Whether it was nonsense, untrue, inappropriate, off-topic, utterly stupid,
gobbeldy-gook... you know, *anything*.

Regarding the Ornette part, it's great that he interviewed Charlie, but
I thought, hey, OC's still around, why not talk to him too?

It would have been interesting, but from a practical standpoint,
Charlie's a lot more articulate. Everything I've ever seen that's been
written or said by Ornette makes me scratch my head and say "What the
hell did he just say?" I find his music much easier to understand than
anything he says.

It would be interesting to hear Anthony Braxton and Ornette talking to each
other.

ornette was not interesting in contributing.
