Okay, I know we *never* do off-topic posts in here [this is kiss ng
thanks] but here goes. This started a few interesting conversations
elsewhere....

These are mostly off the top of my head, more or less in order, and not
limited to any particular genre.

GRINDHOUSE (the whole thing, including all the faux trailers, not the
split up and re-edited dvd versions)

HOT FUZZ

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN

ONCE

JUNO (Just saw this, it is hilarious)

INTO THE WILD

THE LOOKOUT

HOSTEL PART II

THE MIST

Tie: HALLOWEEN/THE SIMPSONS MOVIE

Close runners-up:

KNOCKED UP (doesn't hold up to repeated viewings well though)

AMERICAN GANGSTER

Better Than Expected:

LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD - brainless nonsense, but *great* brainless
nonsense

WRONG TURN 2: DEAD END - see above and add muy mucho gore and strict
adherence to Joe Bob Briggs' rule for a great movie: "anybody can die at
any time".

RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION - basically a collection of 'homages' to
better films, but nicely executed and doesn't overstay its welcome. It's
amazing what having an actual competent,
didn't-graduate-from-film-school-last-week director can do for one of
these movies. Milla's thigh-high-garter survivalist gear is utterly
implausible, but she looks great in it. Also there's a ripoff (er,
'homage') of the Doc/Bub scenes in DAY OF THE DEAD that's like a "MAD
Magazine's scenes you've always wanted to see" spoof of the original.
Far from a groundbreaking film but a nice little time waster.

Totally Screwed Up But I Kinda Liked It Anyway:

SOUTHLAND TALES - It was a total mess, but it was an interesting mess.
Mostly its endless inside jokes (if thats what they were) needed to have
funnier outsides.   Still it was fun to watch the cast struggle with
the material. Even if the best most could do was fight it to a draw.
I'll give the film this much: I wasn't bored.   That's more than I
could say for a lot of other movies in 2007.   There are some vigorous
defenses of this film going on over at slate.com's Movie Club, so
apparently I'm not alone on this one. There's no way I can say this is a
GOOD movie....but it's worth checking out. There's something there.

Overrated: SUPERBAD - 20 minutes worth of funny material spread out over
2 hours. Mind you, I liked the good parts, but it's often awkward and
overly drawn out. It wants to be the 90s generation's DAZED AND CONFUSED
and misses the mark pretty badly. Worth a look on 2 for 1 night.

REALLY Overrated: 28 WEEKS LATER - Truly horrible camerawork that
obscures whole sections of the film, and a script that throws away every
interesting possibility it brings up. I am mystified as to why so many
people like this one.

A few more that I forgot about and added later:

Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten - Fascinating, esp for a guy like
me who was actually around in 77. (Though by the time I got turned on to
punk, it was already all but over. And I was still about 3 years ahead
of anyone else in the 'burbs.   I never met anyone else who was into
The Clash or The Pistols until I went to college in 1980. I distinctly
remember wearing a "Give Em Enough Rope" t-shirt as late as 79 and
getting looked at like I was a serial killer. But I digress.) Since I
could only see this via IFC On Demand I forgot all about it when
compiling my list of movies as I was only thinking about stuff I'd gone
to the theater for.
Best rock doc since the one on The Ramones a couple of years back.

Stardust - I *hate* the entire "fantasy" genre (as in faeries and all
that sh*t) - but I loved this movie.

Gone Baby Gone - Overdone in some places, but Affleck got truly
excellent performances from his actors, and had the balls *not* to
change the grim plot and tone of the novel.

Sunshine - Like an even better version 2010. There's one plot turn I
could have done without but it's otherwise the best sci fi movie I saw
all year, and probably for the last several years.

Ones That Got Away (didnt see 'em):
Ratatouille
The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford
Lars And the Real Girl
I'm Not There
3:10 To Yuma

Your turn!

i've got to agree with Simmo here...as a huge Spider-Man fan since i was a
little kid, Spider-Man 3 was easily the biggest disappointment of the year.

Dude *everyone* thinks that movie is seriously flawed.

A fun, comic-book style movie? Sure.

But not even close to as good a film as the last two were.

My list is all DTV movies except for one. Screw hollywood.
I like the shit made in Canada. Cheap, and NO hollywood.
Seagal, Van Damme, Don Wilson. Milla Jovovich (my only exception)
Wesley Snipes. Mmrc Dacascos. Dolph Lundgren.
