Do you say "Double-U Yeast" or "Why Yeast?" Seems phoenetically unpronounceable (sp?). -- Jonathan -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Weaseling out of things is important to learn. It's what separates us from the animals. Except the weasel. H.S.

Wyeast is believed by some to be the legendary name of Mt. Hood, however the name does not appear in books on Chinookian dialects. The name was apparently used in Indian myths. Wy'east Basin is an area on the north side of Mt Hood. The preceding information came from Oregon Geographic Names---Lewis A. McArthur, 1982. Common pronunciation sounds like "why east". Most people I've spoken to pronounce it "Why-east". I'm really not sure if the 'official' pronunciation drops the second "y" , or if my friends and i are just lazy (probably the latter). john >or "Why Yeast?" > >Seems phoenetically unpronounceable (sp?). > >-- >Jonathan > >-------------------------------------------------------------------------- >Weaseling out of things is important to learn. Here's another, How do you guys pronounce 'Trub'. I know that Charlie Papazian likes to say 'Troob' (did he invent that pronunciation?), but everyone i know (myself included) just says 'trub'. john Brian wrote in message ... >I've always heard it referred to as "why-yeast". I checked with babelfish and it translates trub (with an umlaut over the "u") as "cloudily". So maybe it means something like that in German? Where to you get to hear Charlie speak? I pretty impressed with this group, we have guys here that are on a first name basis with John Plamer and now Charlie Papazian. -----= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =----- http://www.newsfeeds.com - The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----== Over 80,000 Newsgroups - 16 Different Servers! =-----

In his book, Papazian gives the phonetic spelling of "trub". He writes it like troob I believe, but I always say it to sound like tub (as in bathtub). I've always heard it referred to as "why-yeast". Don't know if it's correct or not, but the Homebrew shop knows what I'm talking about. I call it Y....EAST and pronounce as two syllables. Call it whatever you want so long as the guy behind the counter, or on the phone can get you what you desire. I have a brewing buddy that calls Carboy's CAR - BOUY (Buie), that will really irritate ya...;) Cheers, Mike

One thing they all had in common was the "ah eh ee oh oo" pronunciation of the vowels. If you pronounce non English words with those vowel sounds, the words are generally correct and recognizable to speakers of the language. Have you ever heard a German pronounce Lowenbrau? It comes out something akin to "leavin broy". -----= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =----- http://www.newsfeeds.com - The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----== Over 80,000 Newsgroups - 16 Different Servers! =-----

Actually, I've never heard him speak, only read his book. i know he used to speak at some conferences, don't know if he still does. But I'm pretty sure John Palmer posts or at least lurks here time to time. john >Where to you get to hear Charlie speak? I first met him at a conference in 1989. Charlie is a fine guy. He is far more shy than you might expect. He is happy to sit in a corner of a bar and drink quietly. I saw him last in Kansas City at the conference, what three years ago? He struck me as rather burnt out at that time. Imagine the crappy beers he's had to taste over the years...He probably can't meet a homebrewer without them pushing a bottle of 'their great new brew' in his face I wouldn't blame him for being a little withdrawn! john Dan Listermann wrote in message ... >I first met him at a conference in 1989.
