"Scottish tourists say they took bikes of dead Iowans"

MOAB, Utah (AP) - Two tourists from Scotland apparently took abandoned
bicycles that may have belonged to a pair of Iowa men who died from
exposure in southwestern Utah's rugged slickrock country.

Responding to a letter written by Grand County Sheriff Jim Nyland
inquiring about the mountain bikes, a man who identified himself as Gary
Tompsett of Glasgow, Scotland, wrote that he and a companion, Morgan
Donnelly, spotted the bikes just off the Porcupine Rim Trail on Aug. 15.

Seven days later, the bodies of Chris Holt, 21, of Hampton, and Mark
Irvin, 20 of Blairsburg, were found on a small ledge on a cliff.

Tompsett wrote that he and Donnelly, also of Glasgow, were lost when
they stumbled upon the bikes. He looked for the bikes' owners but found
no one.

"It was evident to me that the bikes had been abandoned for some time -
sand driven into tool bags and equipment, mold in the water bottles and
all the tires flat," the letter read.

The Salt Lake City Trombone (er, ah, Tribune) included a bit more
info. Allegedly, the 2 Scots asked a bike store owner if "finders
keepsers" applied to the found bikes & was told "yes". The bike shop
people claim no knowledge of this. Also, all bike shops in Moab knew
by that time that the whereabouts of 2 cyclists was unknown, & any
mention of found bicycles would have triggered notification of
authorities. The article concluded with the implication that
authorities were pursuing more information from the Scots.

Sorry don't have the article at hand to provide quotes.

How long were these guys missing? Seems like it would take a _long_ time for
mold to start growing in water bottles in a climate such as that around
Moab. Ditto for all the tires going flat (assuming no punctures).
