1) Cheers to Pruett, Patrick Racing and Firestone - A great finish!!
But, does it not argue for giving everybody 495 miles and racing just the
last 5? Just Like basketball should be? I couldn't keep a thought
straight, it wasn't just the heat, all afternoon: Press right pedal,
around to the left, around to the left, around to the left, around to the
left ("Shoot me now!").

2) Fell asleep around lap 100 (too much "caviar and champagne" Saturday
night), dreamed that Parker "Gilligan" Johnstone was winning at Sears
Point, woke up _very_ depressed and disoriented. Having followed him
through IMSA, it's great to see him with competitive equipment again.

3a) If Johnstone in the booth doesn't silence the "Lynn St. James is
the most articulate human being since George Will" crowd only a crowbar
will. The guy is just a _little_ too press-smarmy, BUT: He can drive
fast AND speak extemporaneously _without_ tying his tonsils in a knot.
It's almost too bad he's so fast, he's needed in that booth.

3b) Johnstone is also the latest, best argument for, mercifully, beating
Booby Unser to death with the heavy end of a cornpone.

4) I loved seeing Opie lose that way, gee maybe he doesn't just
_deserve_ to win all the time !

I forgot:
6) I swear this is truthful: I turned to a friend and was saying:
"Amazing, St. James hasn't hit anything all afternoon" just as she was
putting Sullivan into the hospital.

engine failure; it was engine failure. you can see the HUGE cloud
of oil smoke from her motor as it emptied itself out. it's very clear
in the replay.

I *really* didn't mean more than I said, an Incredible Coincidence
occurred as I watched the race. St. James' boo-boo (more acceptable?)
resulted in Sullivan's taking a helicopter ride: She put him in the
hospital. Just as I was saying ...

You're still saying it was HER "boo-boo" regardless that it was a matter of
car failure beyond her control.

This is ridiculous.

What "boo-boo"??? Her engine blew. Since when does "my engine blew
and Danny hit me" equate to "I put Danny in the hospital" ????

Or are you claiming that Lyn blew the engine herself right then and
there???

Sheesh.

A blown engine isn't St. James putting Sullivan in the hospital,
it's St. James car collecting Sullivan's car that put him in the
hospital. She was even more a passenger in the incident than
Sullivan. He had control of his car longer than she did, from
the moment her engine blew until he made contact. She had no
control the moment the car began to rotate.

She even radioed in something to the effect of "I think the engine's about
to blow..."
