I have four NOS 6AR6s on eBay with no reserve - and no bids! This tube is a 5881 or 6L6GB equivalent and is popular in many audio applications, including guitar amps. It is also found in many military vintage boatanchors. Please check it out: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item9345579 Thanks, Al - K8EUR

Anyway, the 6AR6 is not a direct replacement for 5881 or 6L6. For one thing it has a different pinout, necessitating some rewiring, plus the electrical characteristics are somewhat different, so saying that it is an equivalent is perhaps a bit misleading, similar perhaps, though not directly interchangable. It does look like 5881s though. Dan Marshall

Dear Daniel, I use 6384's. It's a bear to make adapter but they rock and a 6AR6 can be a sub. I use them to sub. 6l6's and they work great, low distortion. Yes, you must still adapt sockets and yes they are slightly different electrically and bias must be adj. in most cases. Here in L.A., there is a guy that pulls off the bases and resolders them to the 5881 pinout. He labels them Tung Sol 5881. naughty ..... Dear Experts, If I may comment as a novice. I like the sounds produced by the 6AR6 and the 6384. All you need to do is get some OCTAL Bases and make an adapter with a nice Ceramic SOCKET, short leads soldered in place. The pin out is vastly different...EPOXY the base to the socket, takes about 45 minutes to make one and 24 hours to cure... I sub these in and out of 6l6 amps a lot, my Marshall AMPS and AMPEG's...they work quite well + the use of them in Audiophile gear is pretty cool... DO NOT JUST PLUG THEM IN! You need to rebias as well if sub for 5881, 6l6 family. Cheers
