I'm auctioning this Edison collection for a friend. Follow the link below for pictures and descriptions. Please send any technical questions to Mark Chang at mwchang@engr.ucdavis.edu. http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item9477516 3-piece EDISON "Voicewriter" Wax Cylinder Recording/Playback/Shaving System The complete EDIPHONE office set, as was employed in state-of-the-art law offices in the late 1930's including 8 original Edison wax recording cylinders, most with hairline cracks but still usable in original soft-lined cartons. Recording unit comes with the original ceramic microphone (functionally restored) as shown and has a vacuum tube audio amplifier built-in to the unit which drives a ceramic recording stylus which etches the wax cylinder. The playback unit is similar to the recording unit except that it has a playback stylus and a mechanical sounding diaphragm to which a horn or earphone (not included) is connected. The cylinder shaver ("Master Shaver") is used to shave the surface of used or damaged cylinders in order to make them rewriteable. It functions like a small lathe. All three units feature very sturdy heavy-duty construction and have easy and intuitive stainless steel ergonomic controls which are characteristic of early shop equipment. Fractional horsepower Edison universal AC-DC electric motors are employed in all three units and all motors were cleaned and lubricated three years ago. The recording and playback units use adjustable flyball governors which stabilize the rotational speed of the cylinders. Fine pitch worm drives are used in each unit for steady stylus tracking. All three units can be brought to working order after the following repairs are performed: the paper sounding diaphragm on the playback unit is torn and should be replaced or rebuilt; the ceramic stylus on the recording unit is also internally damaged and needs to be replaced; the shaver needs a new shaving bit (which was originally a sliver of glass). All three units have the original paint and silkscreening which show signs of age. Thanks, Reinhard | Reinhard S.
