Was there a final episode of Gunsmoke where they closed out the series
with plot lines being resolved and people riding off into the sunset etc. or
was it just "cancelled".

I don't believe there was any wrap-up episode.

Prime time shows didn't have "plot lines" back then. Only soap operas
had continuing stories. That didn't come to prime time until the late
70s soaps like Dallas and Dynasty and then got incorporated into
regular series by Bochco on his shows. Other than the Fugitive, there
were no "Final Episodes". Shows got cancelled, ended and a new show
took its place.

It's on hiatus.

I believe that the management at CBS changed, and the show just ended as the
result. The new owner hated westerns, or maybe just Gunsmoke, and it ended.
No final episode or anything, just ended. I think, but may be wrong, the
same Bast*rd may have canceled Gilligan's Island and other beloved shows in
the same swoop.

Well, there are a few exceptions to this: "Leave it to Beaver" and "The Dick
Van Dyke Show" both had final episodes that wrapped things up.

How did they store the actors? Are they frozen (they have to be thawed
out) or freeze dried (just add water)?
