Saw this again tonight.

Good lord, what a screenplay, so witty, sooo smart, and a magical cast.

Wasn't this the best Hollywood film in 1940 ? Better than Rebecca and
Grapes of Wrath even.

If you haven't read the play, you've no idea how witty. A lot of the
good stuff--like the Spy magazine office stuff or Sidney Kidd, aren't
in the play.

But don't you find the treatment of Tracy Lord (the Hepburn character)
a bit too conditioned by the social expectations of the time? Wasn't
she, in a sense, emotionally bullied into complacance and a proscripted
emotional life in a way that Hepburn certainly was not? I'm not a died
in the wool feminist, but the manner in which Tracy is piled upon by
virtually every charecter seems excessive and quite controlling, in the
social sense.

Much as I admire the snap of the dialouge in both the play and movie
versions, I find myself having a higher regard for Philip Barry's other
property which reached the screen with the team of Grant and Hepburn -
the earlier "Holiday." (1938) Here, at least our heroine is proactive,
even if it is within the socially restrictive period matrix of the need
to marry in order to live a more fufilling life.
