Wha' Hoppen? - a Get Fuzzy update

Breaking Cat News replaced Get Fuzzy in The Houston Chronicle. Chronicle feature writer Alyson Ward explains: When the Chronicle stopped publishing "Get Fuzzy" at the end of March, the emails started almost immediately: "What happened to Get Fuzzy?" The strip, by Darby Conley, launched in 1999 and was a success from the start. "Get Fuzzy" won the National Cartoonists Society Award in 2002, and horror master Stephen King once called it "the funniest comic strip on planet Earth." But Conley stopped producing a daily strip nearly four years ago; the "Get Fuzzy" daily strip has been in reruns since late 2013. Occasionally, Conley does still produce a new strip for a Sunday, but he seems to be retired from the daily strip business. There's no official announcement, but "we have no indication that Darby will return to the dailies anytime soon," said Ron O'Neal, a manager at Conley's syndicate, Andrews McMeel. Several newspapers dropped "Fuzzy" soon after it lapsed into reruns, including the Washington Post and the Seattle Times. Many more have stopped running the strip since then, O'Neal said, although hundreds of newspapers still carry "Fuzzy." http://www.chron.com/entertainment/article/What-happened-to-the-Get-Fuzzy-comic-strip-11057644.php I liked the "Occasionally, Conley does still produce a new strip for a Sunday" bit. And in 2010 the Chicago Tribune stopped carrying Get Fuzzy. What is taking so long for Get Fuzzy to announce it's real cancellation both daily and Sunday if it is up to Darby Conley, or maybe Darby Conley is MIA to talk about this (Think of a recent podcast series about the whereabouts of 1980's-1990's-2000's health/fitness superstar Richard Simmons).

This seems to be a bit of obsession with some people here. Why not just ask him? i've found only two possible addresses, one in Carisle, MA, the other in Brookline. I think the Carlisle address is current. Its trivial to get the street address and phone number. I'm not going to go into the details, but it looks like there was a death in his family household in early 2013. Perhaps this is related to his going on hiatus. pt

While this is a different Get Fuzzy thread, I'll just add on to here: Tomorrow's Sunday strip (4/9) is a repeat from 2011. Surprised Darby chose this Sunday for a repeat rather than the following Sunday (Easter Sunday). Anyway, this is the fourth "Get Fuzzy" Sunday strip to be a repeat in 2017.

But both Get Fuzzy and Doonesbury in that way have no ends in sight for now despite droppings and cut backs from the newspapers still carrying it.

And the month of April ends with another Sunday (4/30) "Get Fuzzy" repeat from 2011. It's now the fifth time this year a "Get Fuzzy" Sunday strip has reran.

This Sunday's scheduled "Get Fuzzy" strip on Memorial Day Weekend (5/28) is yet another repeat from 2011. It is the sixth time in 2017 a "Get Fuzzy" Sunday strip has reran.

So now Darby Conley, despite no plans to end Get Fuzzy for good soon, puts Sunday reruns once a month mostly at the end of each month?

This Sunday's upcoming "Get Fuzzy" strip (6/11) is yet another repeat from 2011. That makes it the seventh time this year a Sunday "Get Fuzzy" strip has been rerun.

Just in time for Christmas is a NEW Get Fuzzy collection of strips http://www.andrewsmcmeel.com/catalog/detail?sku—81449487102 The title and cover adapted from a Sunday strip from last year http://www.gocomics.com/getfuzzy/2016/07/17 At about 40 Sunday strips a year it will be nearly three years before there are enough strips to make a new book again. By the way, let's wish Darby Conley a Happy Birthday; born, if I have this right, June 15, 1970. D.D.Degg

I apologize in advance if I get Daryl griping about "Get Fuzzy" again but Tomorrow's strip is yet another repeat from 2011. That makes it the eighth time in 2017 a Sunday "Get Fuzzy" strip has reran (at least Sunday "Doonesbury" strips have been rerun-free in almost three years).

We know Chuckle Bros. and Tina's Groove met their end this July 1-2, 2017 weekend, but I am still hoping for Get Fuzzy to end in the next few months (maybe the next newspaper strip to end in 2017?) or before 2017 is over.

Once again, this Sunday's upcoming "Get Fuzzy" strip is another repeat from 2011. This is the second time in three weeks a Sunday "Get Fuzzy" strip has reran and the ninth time overall in 2017 that a Sunday strip has rerun (right now I'm setting the over/under on 2017 Sunday repeats to 16).

Your guess could be less if Darby Conley decides to end Get Fuzzy for good before 2017 ends.

I need help here. It's after 7PM Eastern time on Saturday and Stars & Stripes still has last Sunday's comics section posted. Anybody reading this in Canada please let me know if Tomorrow's "Get Fuzzy" strip is either new or yet another repeat please?

I wish Get Fuzzy was on its last legs. Will Darby Conley announce its end soon before Summer 2017 is over? Maybe before 2017 ends?

My newspaper, the Tampa Bay Times, carries "Get Fuzzy" both Daily and Sunday. They also still carry "Peanuts", "For Better Or For Worse" and Daily "Doonesbury" repeats but "Get Fuzzy" is clearly the one among the four I wish I can do without (yes, I'd rather have "Doonesbury" over "Get Fuzzy").

Once again, Stars & Stripes is up early and once again this Sunday's "Get Fuzzy" is another repeat from 2011. It's the second straight Sunday a "Get Fuzzy" strip has reran as well as the fourth time in six weeks and the 11th time in 2017 a Sunday "Get Fuzzy" strip has reran while the dailies have been in endless reruns for nearly four years. I'm honestly convinced Darby just doesn't care anymore.

Also: Does Garry Trudeau still care about Doonesbury even though since March 2014 it has been in daily rerun mode (This week the daily Doonesbury strips were rerunning strips related to the 1989 Tinnamun Square incident) and mostly first run Sunday mode? I also hope Darrin Bell who does Rudy Park and Candorville has taken the Darby Conley/Garry Trudeau route although both of Mr. Bell's daily strips this July 31-August 5, 2017 week were all reruns..

Trudeau is pushing 70, Darby is 47 (10 years older than me!). Trudeau still produces new Sunday Doonesbury strips (hasn't had a Sunday rerun in close to three years, a far contrast to "Get Fuzzy"). "Doonesbury" had been around for over 45 years. As far as new daily "Get Fuzzy" strips are concerned, its' lifespan was close to 15 years (although some papers like your Chicago Tribune already got tired of "Get Fuzzy" well before some other papers - looking at you New York Daily News and Washington Post - did). Although polarizing (but honestly you can say that for both strips), "Doonesbury" had a much bigger legacy than "Get Fuzzy" has (AM's two other rerun strips - "Peanuts" and "For Better Or For Worse" - are more endearing to families and/or women and IMO rank higher than "Doonesbury" and especially "Get Fuzzy"). And if the Tampa Tribune were still in existence, they are the most hypocritical in how they manage their comics. They used a flawed readers' poll as an excuse to dump "Peanuts" in 2005 (more than five years into its' rerun phase) and in 2010, they dropped "Better/Worse" (and brought back "Shoe" to replace it on Sundays?!?!?). They dropped the Daily Doonesbury strips just as the Classic phase began (replacing it with "Rhymes With Orange") while continuing to run the new Sunday strips but yet they still carried "Get Fuzzy" which remained with the paper until its' May 2016 extinction. Whereas the Tampa Bay Times, the paper my family has subscribed to for years, remains loyal and still runs all four of the aforementioned rerun strips (I could personally do without "Fuzzy" but I don't want to be too hypocritical).

While I agree with you the Duluth News Tribune doesn't - "Doonesbury is moving from the Sunday print edition comics to our online site" Followed by their reasoning for making the change: •Its content often has very adult subject matter •It is unabashedly slanted and opinionated. •[It] doesn't have the quality political commentary it used to have. •Moving Doonesbury to our Opinion section was not an option. And of course they play the usual Get Out of Jail Free card: "However, Doonesbury fans will still be able to read that strip online." Sunday Doonesbury was replaced by Wumo. http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/opinion/4308164-editors-view-changes-comics-means-doonesbury-out-wumo-moving D.D.Degg

Now why couldn't the Tampa Tribune think of something like this? Oh, wait. I forgot. They don't exist anymore. On a quasi-related topic - and I really hate to veer too off-topic - I've noticed that newspapers.com is beginning to add the Tampa Bay Times archives to their collection (though it's under a hopefully temporary embargo). Makes me wonder if the Tribune's archives (of which I think the Times owned when they bought out the Trib last year) could be included there too. We'll see I suppose. Back to "Get Fuzzy" already in progress... :)

I see no reason for Peanuts or FBOFW to still be in newspapers - Peanuts ended over 17 years ago, and FBOFW (a significantly lesser strip IMO) 9 years ago - it's time to let them go and make space for the living. Anyone who really still wants them can buy the books or read them online. Many papers /have/ dropped Doonesbury dailies, but the Sundays are all new, and I see no reason to drop those. Get Fuzzy is an odd case - mostly reruns with occasional new. I'd think this has been going on long enough that the syndicate should step in and either require more new content or declare the strip officially in reruns. However (unlike Darryl, who apparently has a bug up his butt over it) I don't think it should be incumbent on (or even expected of) Darby to do so; I think the syndicate should just require a significant amount of new content if the strip is to be labeled "current", and should label it "classic" otherwise - and let the papers decide if they want a "classic" strip. (I'd personally prefer not, but like I said, I feel that way about Peanuts, too.)

He used to be both. It wouldn't be the first time. Currently Herb and Jamaal creator Stephen Bentley https://www.creators.com/read/herb-and-jamaal has found a calling he has chosen over cartooning - The Rev. Stephen Bentley is a Deacon of the Episcopal Church of St. John the Evangelist http://stjohnsstockton.org/staff.html and has been for years. Among his Good Deeds is Frankenbikes: http://www.recordnet.com/news/20160401/churchs-new-ministry-frankenbikes A casualty of his new Calling is that the Herb and Jamaal comic strip is on a back burner. So far in 2017 there have been two weeks of dailies that have been new strips - April 3 - 8 and April 17 - 22. Other than those 12 dailies all other strips (afaik)have been reruns. 2016 consisted of more reruns (daily and Sunday) than new strips. I THINK 2015 had more new than rerun. But Rev. Bentley found something more important to him than cartooning. Perhaps Darby Conley has also moved on to another primary concern? Of course, that's been the case since 1970. And as the Duluth editor said after an earlier comics page change where they dropped some "kids' content" - the comics are (overwhelmingly) read by adults. > •It is unabashedly slanted and opinionated. Opinionated - yes. "Slanted" implies the editor is letting his own political views color things. And Trudeau's basic political leanings have never changed.
