Hi all, I bought a set of the Ballantine trilogy books about 25 yrs ago at a flea mkt for $1. After the purchase, I noticed that there was a small phrase written on the inside back cover of the LOTR (in pencil) which was signed by Tolkien. The books recently came out of storage, and I figure I should verify the signature just for laughs. I'm guessing it's a fake, but who knows? It's this series: http://derhobbit-film.de/img/buecher/lotrballantine.jpg Where should I even start this task? Scan and post here? Thanks for all your help!

> No, you wouldn't post a binary file here. Agreed - I would post a link to my server. Have you searched the 'net (even > if you must use evil google if necessary) for examples of Tolkien's > signature? Yes. It's not an exact signature, but it's close...but I guess that doesnt mean anything. Have you gone to local bookshops that sell collectible books to > see if they have a signed Tolkien? None that could help. Thanks!

<snip> > I'm guessing it's a fake, but who knows? <snip> Definitely go ahead and upload the image somwhere so we can take a look at it. You might check out the below link for some comparisons of fake vs. authentic signatures. http://www.tolkienlibrary.com/press/fascimilesignatures.htm If we assume the book was published between 1965 and 1973 and you purchased it about 25 years ago (~1981) at a flea market then that means the signature would have been anywhere from 8-16 years old. This would mean the previous owner was most likely the first or second owner. If we assume the person who first ownd the book would know about the signature then they certainly wouldn't sell it to the second person for a cheap price and the chances that they would sell the book for $1 to you are slim. Who knows though, logic rarely seems to take place in life.

The book has a signature that *looks* like it might be "Michael Moorcock," but who knows for sure? > Where should I even start this task? Scan and post here? No, you wouldn't post a binary file here. Have you searched the 'net (even if you must use evil google if necessary) for examples of Tolkien's signature? Have you gone to local bookshops that sell collectible books to see if they have a signed Tolkien?

People aren't machines and they don't sign their names the exact same way all the time. Have you searched evil amazon, evil ebay or slightly-less-evil Barnes & Noble for signed Tolkiens? You could e-mail the sellers and ask them if/how they verified the signature.
