Are for sale posts welcome in this group?

I'm looking to sell some limited editions of Tolkien books, and as there's
no real forum for this where I live (Belgium) I'm trying to find a proper
place to offer these.

Speaking for myself only, I would say first, thanks for asking; and
secondly, no.

If someone is a longtime contributor of content and mentions
something Tolkien-related that is for sale, that would be different
IMHO. But it seems quite tacky for a newcomer to just swan in and use
the group for free advertising.

With all respect, I suggest you use eBay and refrain from further
commercializing newsgroups.

I can sympathize with your sentiments. But this situation hardly seems
"commercializing."

Stan, if I understand you correctly, the big issue isn't really that I'd
like to post a for sale message, but rather that I'm new here?

I couldn't find any information on for sale messages in the FAQ, that's why
I asked. Nor did I see any information that new posters are to be treated
differently than veterans regarding what can be posted and what not.

So I'm a bit annoyed at the hostile reception, which isn't really
encouraging me to become a regular in this news group.

Also, I would like to point out that like what Pete said, I'm not a
commercial enterprise, just an individual who would like to find a good
home for some Tolkien collectable books.

I'm looking forward to hearing from other users here, as I intend to post
my mesage somewhere in the next week.

I would list them on eBay and then just post a short notice or link to your
listing in the newsgroup. I am an avid collector and would probably not by
any books from a random user of the newsgroup. Its much safer to use eBay
or Amazon market place etc. That way there is some security in what you are
buying.

Hello KuroNeko,

I'm going to agree with most of the replies that posting items for sale
(even though they are relevant) without contributing in any other way
is frowned upon but thanks for asking first.

I had actually thought you were Beren from TolkienLibrary.com as not
only does he live in Belgium and collects rare Tolkien books (I believe
he has the largest and rarest collection) but he just put a bunch up
for sale. I've contacted him about this thread but you can always
contact him at info@tolkienlibrary.com If you put them on eBay feel
free to let me know at hyarion@tolkiennews.net and I'll try and include
them into our list of rare eBay items.

Oh and Welcome to the group :)

Once again, I was speaking for myself.

I would not say "the big issue" is being new: it's *using* the group
without *contributing* to the group.

> So I'm a bit annoyed at the hostile reception,

"Hostile"? You asked a question, and you got an answer. If you
characterize anything but abject deference to your lightest wish as
"hostility", you're going to have a hard time in this venue, or any
other for that matter.

That kind of confirms my suspicion, doesn't it?

> I'm looking forward to hearing from other users here, as I intend to post

That sure sounds like the only acceptable answer to your question was
"yes". So why bother answering the question -- why not just post your
ad and be done with it?

I think he's saying you sounded like a snotty, elitest jerk (and btw, why
post yer friggin' business name here? How OT CAN one get huh?) And he
pegged it right you had a problem merely because the guy's a newbie. And
the other readers don't care about your day job either.

I would be more than happy you put the ad here:-)Books are always something
preciousss. While I strongly discourage people in other forums so that they
won't buy used electronic equipment (like cameras, camcorders) I don't think
there would be anything wrong with a book, unless you have dipped it in
coffee.
Welcome to this forum:-)

Thanks for your help. I have contacted Beren and I'll see how it turns out.

Ebay is my last option, I've poor experience with it (poor service and
since I use it rarely, I have no huge positive feedback. Add to that the
high shipping costs from Belgium abroad and the ever-rising costs Ebay asks
quickly add up to make it the last choice)

But I'll let you know if Beren lists these books in his shop. I've also
contacted Rene at Tolkienshop.com, but received no reply sofar.

Anyway, thanks for the friendly help!

Thanks for the friendly welcome to the group. I'm not yet sure I'll post a
for sale message here considering the rather fierce opposition :-) from a
few users, but I would like to say here that these books are unread new
condition (provably so, as the gilded sides of the pages still stick
together :-)

Any blasphemer who dips books into coffee - any book but especially Tolkien
works - should be shot on sight *eg*

The other provision is that it's OK to sell things here if the proceeds
go to the glorious cuse of combatting Chrisopher Tolkien's lies about
Middle-earth. On that note, who is interested in spider-porn? All
profits to the Fredonian Academy of Tolkien Studies go to charitable
causes, to Middle-earthian research, and to the defense of Truth
against Lies. Plus my mansion needs a new addition.

Malcontents aside, I think it's generally considered OK Netiquette to post
stuff for sale if you put "FS" or "FA" in the subject line, even without
asking the NG's collective permission first. And as long as, as Öjevind
Lång says, you're a private party.

> but I would like to say here that these books

How do you know they're stuck together unless you've tried to pull them
apart? And if you've tried to pull them apart, you've probably succeeded.
The ultimate Catch-22.

I don't see anything wrong with offering Tolkien books for sale here,
provided the offer does not come from a professional book vendor. That you
clearly are not - I can tell it from the ring in your voice - so let me wish
you welcome too.

i think it's repulsive to turn the psychosexual oddities of that
unfortunate lady arachnid into the masturbatia of a diseased mind. let
alone into filthy lucre.
