Just found this page,

http://town.hall.org/Archives/radio/IMS/HarperAudio/020294_harp_ITH.html

where one can download excerpts of Tolkien reading LotR, altogether
40 minutes. The quality is not very good, however.

Just in case anyone else is interested.

I haven't listened to all the excerpts on that webpage, but it looks
like those recordings can also be found on _The J.R.R. Tolkien Audio
Collection_, along with some other material (2 CDs of JRRT reading from
TH, LOTR, and Tom Bombadil, and 2 CDs of CJRT reading from the Silm).

The quality of the CDs is not really any better, unfortunately.

It is fascinating to hear bits of the books read by JRRT himself.....

Sadly not good quality, as you say. But absolutely fascinating. Thanks for
that. I just listened to the bit where he read the poem about the Battle of
the Pelennor Fields. He seemed to be putting on a reader's voice, but I
wonder if anyone can tell me whether they can hear an accent there? Tolkien
was born in South Africa, came to England when he was three, grew up in and
around Birmingham and lived most of his life in Oxford. What accent would
that produce, and what accent do people hear when they listen to him speak?

Christopher
