Dear people

i have a friend who is trying to find a broken pipe,
she broke slab ,cut some roots of a giant oak tree
trying to find the leak

i heard that all you have to do is reroute the pipe starting from your house
to the road which she did find part of the pipe close to it (the road)
but her cement driveway is in the way and she has another oak tree in front
of the house

any suggestions anyone?
she is trying to save money by not calling a man to fix it

I assume this is the water pipe and she is connected to
city/county/whatever water and does not have her own well?

If you know someone with a metal detector, may be able to find pipe.

If not, pipes many times will go directly to kitchen or bathroom. So if
can't get metal detector, look for pipe going into house/basement possibly
outside of kitchen/bathroom.

Otherwise start digging around front of house. Pipe may go straight from
water meter to house, so start where pipe is pointing. Pipe may be 4 or 5
feet down.

Once you find house connection and street connection, dig trench and run
new pipe. May need permit to do this.

This may be a case where it costs more money to do it yourself. Hopefully the
house has a water shutoff valve. Close that tight and then watch the dial on
the water meter for a couple of hours. If it moves then you have a leak.

A good plumber with a metal detector and a sound probe will probably be able
to locate the source without breaking slab or killing trees. Finding the exact
spot and fixing it is cheaper than replacing the entire pipe.
