I am going to install a Ricoh 16x12x40 CD Writer on my computer with XP installed..Would it be advisable to install it on the same ide channel as my Hard Drive(Primary) or on the secondary channel the same as my DVD rom..I will be using NERO 5551 burning software..Some advise putting it on the same channel as the HD (Primary),others advise putting it on the DVD channel(Secondary).Which has the best advantage??.My setup is 1ghz athlon, kt7a mb ,geforce2mx 32mb, soundblaster 16, 512mb ram.30gbMaxtor..Any advice would be appreciated.. Well, I have a Maxtor HD. It works great. It's on the same same IDE port as my DVD drive (the HD as master and the DVD as slave). The cd burner (a TDK 12x10x32) is connected to the secondary IDE as master since Nero recommends the cd burner and the cd-rom drive to be on different IDE ports. cheap harddrives such as maxtor often have problems with CD-drives at same port, also not all cd-drives work with any other at same port, however, just try it and when u have a working combination use that, if it works it doesnt matter at all what drive is at what port my personal solution is to have the harddisk and the dvd at primary port and the recorder as single drive at secondary port, but depending on brand and models that might not work with ur drives "michael.oland" <michael.oland@ntlworld.com> schrieb im Newsbeitrag news:iFPQ7.19392$GU1.3897545@news6-win.server.ntlworld.com... > I am going to install a Ricoh 16x12x40 CD Writer on my computer with XP > installed..Would it be advisable to install it on the same ide channel as my > Hard Drive(Primary) or on the secondary channel the same as my DVD rom..I > will be using NERO 5551 burning software..Some advise putting it on the same > channel as the HD (Primary),others advise putting it on the DVD > channel(Secondary).Which has the best advantage??.My setup is 1ghz athlon, > kt7a mb ,geforce2mx 32mb, soundblaster 16, 512mb ram.30gbMaxtor..Any advice > would be appreciated.. > Thanks > Mike > > > > --- > Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. > Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). > Version: 6.0.303 / Virus Database: 164 - Release Date: 24/11/2001 > > > >

I have 3 Athlons 850Mhz 1,1Ghz and a 1700+ all machines have 7200RPM drives in (Maxtor simply the best) and i dont have any more problems now im free of rubbish like seagate and western (fall apart)Digital but needless to say i allways put my HDD on the primary master and CD or DVD Roms as a secondary master with the CDRW as a slave as periperals such as CD, DVDand CDRW are 16Bit access and HDD are 32Bit access they are not designed to work on the same cable also CD Roms should not be put on a UDMA 66 cable. Terry, What burner software are you using with your LG? Mine came with EZ CD Creator 4.03 which of course doesn't work with XP. LG is sending me 5.0 to replace 4.03. I'm being told you need 5.01 or greater to work with XP. Just curious . . . It depends..... If you are going to do a lot of HD to CD Burner they should be on different channels If you are mainly going to copy CD's from the DVD ROM drive to the burner they should be on different channels. If you use UltraDMA 66 or 100 with an 80 wire flat cable there is less of a problem because they have their own dedicated channels on the cable. In all cases - make sure you set up the Slave/Master relationship correctly - especially on 80 wire cables. One on the end if Master and second is slave. Blue goes to M/B. Nothing wrong wih Maxtor drives either - most tolerant of others set as slaves or Masters in my experience "michael.oland" <michael.oland@ntlworld.com> wrote in message news:iFPQ7.19392$GU1.3897545@news6-win.server.ntlworld.com...

What you said: "If you use UltraDMA 66 or 100 with an 80 wire flat cable there is less of a problem because they have their own dedicated channels on the cable." What I say: The 80 conductor ribbon cable only has 40 data lines like any other ribbon cable. Except, in between the data lines there are ground lines. This cuts down on "cross-talk" between the data lines (interference). So to correct you there is only one channel on an ATA-100 cable. They suggest that you use this type of cable with ATA-66 and ATA-100 capabale DVD/CD-ROM's and HDD's. Please don't give others misleading information about things you haven't read enough about. I have found that if I set my burner as a Master and CDRom as the Slave and then my HHD as Master and Slave on the other channel, I get much better performance form the burner..
