Hi folks: My four yr old daughter wants a computer of her own. After looking at the pseudo-computers that you can buy at the toy stores (and being too cheap to buy a MAC right now), I remembered that I have a 99 rusting away in the attic. If memory serves I also have the metal "coffin" expansion box, a 32 k card, RS232, voice synthesizer, and even a pascal card. I ran it on a small B&W TV. OK, a couple of questions (didn't see a FAQ listed so excuse my ignorance). I have an old EGA monitor and also a NEC Multi-scan. Is their some way to use either of these with the TI? As far as software, I think the easiest thing for my daughter to handle would be the plug in modules (at least at first) so I would be most interested in them as opposed to floppy based programs. Another thought: Is there a way (read this controller card) to run a hard disk in this system---say an old IBM-PC type Seagate 225 or something else cheap. Obviously I don't want to invest much in this system, as it would be an interium one before I buy the family Mac Thanks. -- ] [ / o \ Art Miller /-o---\ Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical Research Institute \___o_/ Internet: Miller_A@bms.com

Yes, you can run any MFM-type hard drive. You need an HFDC which was made by Myarc. They are now available from CECURE Electronics. Address is: S74 W17000 Janesville Road P.O. Box 132 Muskego, WI 53150 Call 1-800-959-9640 FOR ORDERS ONLY!!!! Call 414-679-4343 for all else I'm not sure how much they are going for, but I believe it's close to $200. I know that is a lot compared to PC controllers, but that's typical for TI stuff that wasn't made in large quantities and has a fairly high demand. Forget the EGA monitor, no way to do it. As for the multisync, there soon (or could be here already, not sure) will be a way to use that on your TI. A company call WHT (Wester Horizon Technologies) is making a video board that will support VGA/SVGA. It'll plug into the PEB. Sorry, but can't give any more info than that as that is all I can remember. As for software, there are still a few dealers selling modules and disks. Names of dealers selling modules escape me right now (of course). You can also find individuals selling off modules that they no longer want. A good source of that is right here in comp.sys.ti. JL

If you have an 80-column device, you can use some CGA monitors (old Maganovox models are particularly well-suited). I'm leary about any compatibility with EGA, and although planned, I don't think any device is currently available for using any VGA nor multi-sync monitors. YES! You can use a Seagate 225 (MFM type hard drive) with a 4A. But, you have to have a Myarc HFDC (Hard and Floppy Drive Controller) to connect the Seagate to the system. I believe Cecure Electronics has some brand new HFDCs for sale for $200+ or so.

My TI gets along quite nicely with the family Mac. They haven't littered any puppies YET, but we'll see. -- Erik G. Olson =+ Where am I? Tell the truth-- olsone@rpi.edu =+ I can bear it.
