Many thanks to the folks who responded to me query concerning the TX's memory scheme and configuration. In summary (since several people asked) here's what was said. 1) The TX is essentially an XT-level machine, with only an 8-bit bus. It cannot use extended memory other than the 128k that Tandy will install to bring the machine to 768k. It can, however, use expanded RAM. 2) Computer Shopper lists several companies who sell expanded boards for this system. A populated 2MB board will run around $285. 3) It's not an AT-level machine. The 286 processor boosts the speed a little but there's no way to run in protected mode. 4) Someone suggested trying to find an upgrade for the BIOS. I've poked around a bit and no one seems to have one of these available for the Tandy series. If anyone knows of someone who does, please let me know. Now, if anyone knows of a way to run Windows and PFS WindowWorks with onl (only) 768K, please let me know! I think this flame is getting a bit rediculous. When I bought my TX in 1987, it was quite nice for the time. It came with 640k when 640k wasn't really needed for programs like WordPerfect or Lotus. IBM had just introduced the PS/2s. The 3.5" drive was nice for the time too. I certainly won't argue that Tandy's newer 1000 series leave a LOT of power and functionality behind. But before the TL series, there was nothing wrong with the 1000s. Tandy has lost any hope of succeeding in the computer market it had. Before, it had a quality product that was reasonably competitive with the rest of the market. Now it just has an overpriced product that it can't sell. Gene

And Tandy claims that using the 8-bit bus is an "advantage"? Ok, so this may not be an exact quote, but somewhere I do have a release from Tandy saying that using the 8-bit bus is better on slower 286's. > >2) Computer Shopper lists several companies who sell expanded boards for this > system. A populated 2MB board will run around $285. $285!!! Wow, what a rip! 1 meg of RAM only costs about $40! bsl

Yea, I can get a mag of ram in a SIMM pak for $40, but can you put that in a computer that does not have a SIMM socket? For those systems you need a card which is most of the cost, and the card has a whole processor (the MMU) on it as well, so for those computers that do not have a SIMM area, $285 is a very LOW price for a memory upgrade. -- Eric Levinson levinson@vax.sonoma.edu !
