Putting a Hard Disk into a 1000/SL

I am trying to put a Hard Disk into a 1000/SL. I have a Seagate
8-bit MFM controller and a Seagate 225 disk drive.
Is there likely to be a conflict with the ROM Drive (C:)?
Is there any way to disable this ROM Drive??
Is there some trick to getting this combination to work (like re-addressing
the Disk BIOS ROM)??

So far I have been unable to make this combination work. I can start to
low-level format the drive, but it usually hangs the machine part way thru.

Sure would appreciate some help with this one.

Thanks in advance.

bill

The C drive which is your ROM drive should automatically become a D drive if
your controller is recognized properly, and then your first drive would be C:
followed by E: F: ... Z:

If you install DOS 5.0, it will obliterate the rom drive all together and if
you use deskmate, you will need to get the off the shelf version (which you
could get for half price at any Radio Shack store) if you bring in your cover
of your deskmate instruction manual.

Have you changed the video interrupt from IRQ 5 (PC/Jr compatible)?
On the Main Logic Board, you will find a jumper E1-E2-E3. The settings are:

E1-E2	Select Video Interrupt on IRQ 5
E2-E3	Normal Video Interrupt (Default)

(Note in the Tech manual, the schematic shows the jumper to be E2-E3-E4
and the jumper tables says E1-E2-E3. I don't have one to look at here
 so make your own determination.)

If this strap is set to IRQ5, it will conflict with interrupt support
for standard PC hard disk controllers. By changing this strap, you may
get the hard disk working, BUT any PC/jr/1000 compatible games may
stop working since they aren't getting video interrupts where they expect
anymore. Some vendors have modified the hard disk controller to interrupt
on IRQ 2 to avoid this conflict, and charge an extra $30 for a cut and jump.

All this is because the original 1000 was meant to be compatible with the
PCJr, not the PC. By the time the 1000 SL/TL came out, you could set jumpers
and get a pretty-PC pc-compatible, but some of the existing software expected
the PCjr environment.
