SUBJECT ad/soft/WebReader - Usenet newsreader in Java (beta) DESCRIPTION The Fractal Images Company is proud to announce the availability of WebReader(tm) Beta Release 3. WebReader is the first USENET newsreader written entirely in Sun Microsystem's Java(tm) programming language. PLATFORM Solaris 2.3, Solaris 2.4, Windows 95 BODY The Fractal Images Company is proud to announce the availability of WebReader(tm) Beta Release 3. WebReader is the first USENET newsreader written entirely in Sun Microsystem's Java(tm) programming language. Much more than just another newsreader, WebReader allows the user to post and read News messages in graphically-rich HTML, not just dry ASCII. Users are no longer restricted to the use of mere caps and exclamation marks to emphasize a word or phrase. With WebReader, you can now express yourself using the full power of HTML, including bold, italic, graphics and other complex HTML 2.0 tags, as well as some of the more popular and compelling tags available through Netscape Navigator(tm). Compared to the static nature of Web pages, newsgroups have always been a more active and effective way to exchange and distribute information on the Internet. But newsgroups have never had the creative tools available to Web designers necessary to fully express information. The revolutionary WebReader gives users the best of both worlds, allowing users to post and read articles "enhanced" through the use of HTML! WebReader-challenged newsreaders see only an ASCII "synopsis" of the enhanced posts, not the HTML tags, so articles posted by WebReader are fully downward compatible with other newsreaders. Release 3 of WebReader includes the following enhancements: a. HTML editor--WebReader 0.3b includes a full-function HTML editor, to help in composing enhanced articles and Web pages in general. The editor includes previewing, multi-level undo, and many other features. HTML version 2.0 tags are supported, and the editor is easy to use even for those who are not proficient in HTML. b. Article categories--This is another WebReader "first". Articles may be assigned a message category at the time they are posted. Readers may then filter on the category of their choice, resulting in a display of only those articles in the given category. This makes it easy to browse popular groups, looking only for articles of a particular interest. Users may specify not only a main category, but any number of subcategories as well when posting or reading articles. c. Proxy support--Now you can specify an HTTP proxy host, for reading enhanced Usenet articles. d. Simplified user interface for posting of articles--The post dialog user interface has been cleaned up, resulting in less busy dialog windows. The WebReader Beta program began April 1, 1996. If you are not already part of the Beta test, and would like to join, you must: a. be running Solaris either 2.3 or 2.4 OR Windows 95 b. currently have the Sun's JDK Version 1.0 or later installed That's it. To join the WebReader Beta, please send e-mail indicating the platform(s) you will be running WebReader on, and we'll send you the WebReader binaries and associated files. The Beta program is expected to last through August. Please note: The Fractal Images Company reserves the right to exclude any individual or organization from the WebReader Beta program. --- Robert Uomini The Fractal Images Company (http://www.fractals.com) Voice: 510-528-0258/800-548-0258 Fax: 510-528-0243 -- To submit, mail postings to java@relog.ch (please read the guidelines posted)
