What is the difference between IDL and PV Wave

I work with IDL, but I have never heard of PV Wave except in this
newsgroup (and its predecessor).  Previous message have implied that
they were equivalent, but in the first message posted to this new group,
John Travis writes:
"PV Wave, far superior to IDL."

Can someone explain the difference.
