Can VB "script" other applications?

(I apologize in advance if this is too rudimentary a question for this newsgroup.) Is it true that Visual Basic can be used to control other applications on a PC? I've been working for some time on a Macintosh-based workflow automation system that uses AppleScript to permit the sharing of data between an electronic forms package, a data base, and a knowledge system that does validation and routing of the forms. There has been considerable interest in the system by PC users. All of the applications I use either also run on PCs or are very similar to ones that do. What I need is a good mechanism for allowing the programs to "seamlessly" interact on a PC, and am told that VB might be just what I'm looking for. If VB can be used to control other apps, must those apps be "VB-savvy" (i.e. specially designed to work with VB)? Thanks in advance for any info.
