MASM version 6.11 sells for about $179 at Fry's. At Stanford bookstore,
they have an identical looking package that is marked "ACADEMICALLY
PRICED" and sells for only $49, for students, faculty and staff.

The package DOES NOT SAY STUDENT VERSION and the salesperson assured me
that this version is not in any way inferior to the full blown version
being sold at Fry's.

Have you had any experience with this academically priced version? Is it
really the full version, with no limitations? I would also welcome any
pointers to freeware/shareware assemblers for 80486 hardware/MSDOS/Windows.

There should be a triangle on it, saying Academically priced, or if not
then look at the top where the bar code it, and you should see in the
description of the product the letters of AED...meaning of course
academic.  It is in no wise different from the ''full blown'' version, just
that MS and others have learned that what a student learns on, they will
buy later on when they are in the ''real world'' and an update comes
up...besides which if they didn't havev academic prices, then they would
<students> ''borrow'' like crazy anyway,
since we are usually strapped for cash.  BTW...that's a VERY good price
they are selling it for.  I know...my full time job while going to
school is running a software dept.
