Here is the program for the APL conference of the year: APL94 I post only part of it (to avoid to long messages) and I'll complete it in the next weeks. If you want it complete let me know, I'll send it. I am trying to get places to make it available by ftp. Thanks for coming Alain Delmotte Program Chairman =================== APL94 : YOUR Conference ==================== APL94 offers a varied programme of technical papers, of more active events like workshops and panels as well as other activities: Tutorials, posters' sessions, birds-of-a-feather sessions. The language itself is explored, especially its developments like the new user's interface (Windows and other GUI) and its future: evolution towards Object Oriented APL. The applications presented show that the language is a unique and important pioneering computer environment in many different fields; a position that many envy us. APL is now at a turning-point; it is time to evaluate the past: achievements, successes but also mistakes, failures and on the basis of that evaluation it is time to plan for the future. We hope that APL94 will be a key part in the process. A conference is also a time and a place to meet other people sharing the same interests, to exchange and to debate ideas, to start new co-operative projects. APL94 will offer you ample opportunities to meet old friends, to discover new ones, to have constructive contacts. From the start APL94 has been an illustration of this desirable International Co-operation. The Conference is less the result of the actions of a few people from one country than of a general co-operation of the European APL Societies and Associations. We hope that this spirit of common action will be the foundation of the Conference. We offer you a framework in which you can realise great things, YOU will do the conference and the future of APL. We do consider that workshops, tutorials and panels are major occasions to invest yourself in the activities of the Conference. Conference Chairman Program Chairman Joseph De Kerf Alain Delmotte 1. Invited speakers 1.1 Opening session: How symbols and notations may affect the mind and brain. Dr. Paul J. Lewi, Janssen Research Foundation, Beerse, BELGIUM Computer science produces powerful symbols and notations. Psychoanalysts proposed a model for the mind. Neuro-physiology begins to reveal the molecular structure of the brain. The brain appears as a gigantic parallel computer that continuously rewires itself: plastic hardware. Patterns, when reinforced, grow into synaptic connections between neurones: sticky software. Symbols are the first links in the chain of encoding that maps the world into our brains. They mediate between the observer and the observed. Primitive people and alchemists understood the charm of symbols. Modernist artists have rediscovered their magic. Present-day scientists are regaining their alliance, most recently in fractal geometry and chaos theory. An understanding of symbols and notations is essential for our intellectual, if not mental, health. Because they embody our hopes, beliefs and fears, they record the progression and fate of mankind. 1.2 Closing session: Acquisition and Processing Data from Normal and Cancer Cells Dr. Ivar Giaever, Nobel Prize, Rensselaer Polytechnics Institute, USA It is common today to control an experimental set-up using a dedicated personal computer which is used to both acquire and process the data. Many computer programs exist for this purpose, but APL can easily be adapted to do this task. In this talk, a novel system will be described that can obtain morphological data from cells in tissue culture. When mammalian cells are cultured on small gold electrodes, they will alter the impedance of the electrodes. By measuring the impedance, it is possible to get quantitative data with regards to both the dynamic and static behaviour of the cells. During the experiments, the impedance is plotted on the computer screen, and afterwards the data is analysed using Fast Fourier Transform, Hurst Rescaled Range Analysis or other mathematical techniques. 2.
