-----------Message forwarded from IPSA Mailbox------------- no. 213848 filed 17.36.47 tue 19 apr 1994 from crl to uclapl subj Toronto ACM SIGAPL meeting April 25, 1994 (AGM proposed) The next meeting of the Toronto ACM APL Special Interest Group is on Monday, April 25, 1994, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Speakers: Michael Friendly and John Fox of York University Topic: "On the Design and Implementation of APL2STAT, An Object-Oriented Environment for Statistical Computing and Graphics." Location: BCE Place (Canada Trust Tower) 10th floor Cafeteria, Bay St. and Front St., Toronto, Ontario Free Admission - All Welcome! Object-oriented design is a programming methodology well-suited to the implementation of large, complex systems such as database systems, windowing systems (Xwindows, NeXTstep), and to developing applications with consistent interfaces and which can share data and methods with ease. There have been several attempts to develop object-oriented systems in APL, but these have mainly been small demonstrations of OO concepts and techniques. In this talk, Michael Friendly and John Fox describe the design and implementation of APL2STAT, an object-oriented environment for statistical computing and graphics. The talk will include a general introduction to object-oriented concepts and methods; a demonstration of APL2STAT; illustrations of APL2 programming techniques which implement object-oriented methods in APL2STAT and in other applications; and the use of APL2 operators to generalize many statistical methods and to provide a uniform way to deal with missing data. Michael Friendly is Associate Professor of Psychology at York University. His most recent book is ``SAS System for Statistical Graphics'' (SAS Institute, 1991). He has been using APL in teaching and research for over 20 years. John Fox is Professor of Sociology and Mathematics & Statistics at York University. He is author of ``Linear Statistical Models and Related Methods'' (Wiley, 1984) and ``Regression Diagnostics'' (Sage, 1991), and is a long-time APL user. Annual meeting notice: The executive proposes to move the administration of electing the 1994/95 executive from the May meeting to the April meeting. If approved, then pizza will be available for members following the presentation! Visitors are welcome to join in for a small fee. Future meetings: Monday, 16 MAY 94. IBM Conference room Aetna Tower, third floor, rooms 302-303 79 Wellington St. W., Toronto Jim Brown of IBM on APL2 for OS/2 and other platforms and client/server environments. The April 1994 issue of "Gimme Arrays!" will be distributed to members of the Toronto SIG, and other APL SIGs worldwide next week. I would _really_ like to know more about this... Thanks in advance Pedro
