You Wouldn't Believe What Happened With the IDT Server

.. An Internet Experience .. Recently, I ordered a Internet Server called International Discount Telecommucications or (IDT) from New Jersey, to set me up with a new, low cost shell account that was advertised here, in the Houston Chronicle newspaper, at a very reasonable monthly price. .. It's been about 10 days now since I have given them my credit card number and still, I have no service. On Friday of last week they faxed me a package with my email address and password and I received the same information again on the following, Monday, by mail. I've tried to login to the server but it gives me a '* * Bad Password' prompt. So then I tried to email myself a message from my Delphi server and I get my test message bounced with a, 'User Unknown' prompt. .. It appears that my email address and password are not even on line. I've faxed my problem to IDT's fax line at 1-800-928-2057 several times, without any response, and I've also emailed their help line at 'help@ios.com' several times without even one email answer. .. I've called their tech line too, at 1-201-883-2000, in which a recorded female voice tells me to wait, and puts me on 'hold', so I have waited, up to 30 minutes of long distance time, without anyone answering. Once I did get an answer from the help-tech line after only 15 minutes of waiting, and a lady promised to 'fix' the problem within the hour, that was last Monday, and I'm still not on line. So I'm beginning to wonder if this company really exists. .. It might be worth mentioning that one of their telephone lines, is always available, (1-800-245-8000). That number, is their 'new order' line, but the sales people there tell me that they can only take orders and cannot fix problems. They suggest that I call the help-tech line to get help .. When I insisted that the other numbers are not responsive, they said that they could 'connect' me directly with the proper people. It was at this point that it really got funny, I was either 'disconnected' from their line and had to redial all over again, or sometimes, I got a busy signal, and on two occassions, I got a recording, "We're sorry, the number you have reached is not a working number, please check your number and dial again" .. If it wasn't so frustrating, it would be funny. It's hard to imagine how any business can survive in this highly competitive area when the top management seems to be so poor. I don't blame the employees for the faults of management, because some of the sales personell did try to pass a written message from their order line to the tech department to alert them of the problem. And I do I want to publicaly thank them individually for their efforts on my behalf, so thank you.... .. Ellen Sherman Karen ? Kay Patel Harold Nusbaum Lisa Barner Tom Jones David Etzler Brad Moore .. ....and about ten others, whose names I didn't write down. .. I guess, IDT may not be the server for me, and I had such high hopes. I will probably keep using the more expensive, Delphi shell account, since it is infinitely more accessable. .. Out of curiosity, I was wondering if any of you readers out there have had similar experiences with this company called (IDT) or sometimes it is called International Discount Telecommunications or Internet Online Services (IOS), and sometimes it is called 'Access Communications' or their email name of 'Accesscomm.net'. .. I am also wondering if these unusual experiences are reflections of something more serious? Something that the Attorney General should be interested in? .. Connor Cherridge@Delphi.com

Something that the Attorney General should be >interested in? There is a thread in one of the ISP mailing lists (inet-access, I think) about IDT. Two words: stay the fuck away. ;-) They offer some kind of deal where they provide you with some kind of turnkey ISP package which you then must setup, run and support while maintaining a minimum user:line ratio (5:1 or 10:1 or something?) and charge a miserable amount for unlimited access ($15/month or so, they keep changing the number). Once you've built up a customer base, they'll come in and take over your POP (which is in the agreement) and you cannot solicit any of "their" customers for a period of one year afterwards (also in the agreement). The above probably isn't entirely accurate, but just from what I recall on the mailing list... the story *is* pretty horrible. -- Brian ("Though this be madness, yet there is method in't") Tao taob@gate.sinica.edu.tw <-- work ........ play --> taob@io.org
