Is there a translator available which can convert Word for Windows documents into ASCII on the fly for serving to gopher and/or wais clients? What I'd like to do is set up a directory tree that users could save their documents in, in normal Word for Windows format. The documents would then be available to the gopher / wais servers for reading or copying or printing. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks, Rich P.S. please respond directly to my e-mail address below. /-----------------------------------------------------------------------\ | Richard F. Richard, In article <1993May7.184325.4601@samba.oit.unc.edu> Richard F. I've attached two procedures we've developed for converting Word and WordPerfect documents to ASCII while losing as little formatting as possible. I hope this helps. I have modified it to reflect what we've learned and to explain why the various things are done. David 1) Select the entire document. 2) Change the font to courier, change the type size to 12 points, and adjust the right margin to 7&3/8 inches. This will keep the lines at no more than around 75 characters. 3) Choose "Paragraph..." under the "Format" menu, and set the spacing after each paragraph to 12 points. This will cause a blank line to be generated after each paragraph. 4) Choose "Plain Text" under the "Format" menu. This will ensure that no italics, bolding, etc. are being used. 5) Choose "Save As..." under the "File" menu and set the file type to "Text with Layout." This will write a standard ASCII file that can be FTP'ed to the WAIS server. After these steps, your document should be very close to the right formatting. Tables and other "special" formatting may require some extra work by hand, however. _________________________________________________________________________ Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1993 07:21:01 -0800 To: oac_nts_development@oac.uci.edu From: Brian Roode <BGRoode@uci.edu> Subject: WordPerfect -> Text instructions Here's what I came up with to convert WordPerfect for Windows (version 5.1) to text files: -------- (bgr 1/19/93) Instructions for reformatting WordPerfect for Windows documents for use in UCI's Campus Wide Information Service. 1. Select the entire document. 2. Choose "Font" from the "Font" menu. Select "New Courier" Deselect any special "appearance" or "size" settings such as bold or italic. 3. Adjust the right margin to 7&3/8 inches to keep lines at no more than around 75 characters. 4. Deselect all text. 5. Choose "Save As..." from the "File" menu and set the file format to "ASCII Text (DOS)". This will create a standard text file suitable for use as a CWIS information source document. Please note that tables and other special formatting will require extra work by hand. Brian Roode, Office of Academic Computing, Network & Telecommunications Services (714) 856-8350
