Interpretation of polar plots

I would like to use gnuplot to generate polar plots of data, but with
the angle coordinates interpreted in "compass rose" fashion -- that
is, with 0 degrees drawn at the straight up 12 o'clock position, and
with angles increasing in the clockwise direction, rather than in the
"mathematics" style, where 0 degrees (oops, radians for the real
mathematicians) is at 3 o'clock and angles increase in the
counter-clockwise direction.

This would seem like an easy-to-implement and generally useful
feature, but I cannot find any way to do this with version 3.5, and
haven't seen any mention of it being added to version 3.6.
