Impressive work. I have been torturing it a bit and looked with a magnification glass through the sources. I can't say other than great work. Thanks! For the freaks and those wanting to know. The max compression mode gets almost the same ratio (on MS-DOS machine) as PKZIP 1.93a. And almost means 0.5% worse. The speed is quite reasonable. And free, sources included and portable of cource. The speed is quite reasonable. And free, sources I have been wrong here. Compression seems to be between 0.1% better and 0.2% worse on average (depending on file type and characteristics). The compression speed of the tigtest mode seems to be about 20% slower than PKZIP 1.93a which is very impressive. Even more than at first sight. I agree. Maybe we should use INFO-ZIP as a standard instead of pkzip. I would sure use zip 2.0 before I would ever worry about compatiblitly with pkzip 2.0. Especially since I'll probably never see it. The only thing that doesn't work in ms-dog is funzip, and probably very few people would care, anyway. But the funzip that came with zip19p1x.zip either locks or reboots my machine. (Maybe this is their idea of fun :-) Interesting new way of storing directories. Anyway. Very very good work. gmribeir@david.wheaton.edu (Glauber) writes about zip 1.9/unzip 5.0: > The only thing that doesn't work in ms-dog is funzip, and > probably very few people would care, anyway. But the funzip that > came with zip19p1x.zip either locks or reboots my machine. There is *no* funzip in zip19p1x.zip. If you have a copy with one in it, please delete it and get a correct version of zip19p1x.zip from a trustable ftp site such simtel and any of its mirrors, or garbo in Europe. (See comp.compression FAQ for details.) funzip is only distributed in source form in unzip50.zip or unzip50.tar.Z. funzip is almost useless on MSDOS, which does not have true pipes. This is why it was not included in the MSDOS makefiles and never released as an MSDOS .exe file. We should have put a big warning that funzip was not supported on MSDOS, sorry. We will do our best to support it for MSDOS in the next version of unzip (even though it's not very useful there). Jean-loup Gailly info-zip guy PS: thanks for the congratulations. They are appreciated.

Notice that the ZIP default mode is about 50% slower than the PKZIP default mode, a weak comparission since ZIP does compress better in default mode. The ZIP default mode has about the same speed as the PKZIP 1.93a -EX mode. >Anyway. Very very good work.
