STACKER OR PC STORE OR ????????

I need more hard disk space but can't afford a larger hard disk at this
time. Hence, I am looking at on the fly compression products. I've heard a
lot about STACKER but relatively nothing about the newcommer PC STORE (I
think that's what it's called). A comparison of these two products would
greatly be appreciated, as well as any information on alternative products.

Thanks a million

DON'T SCREW WITH STACKER 2.0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That SOB almost took out some vital info on my hard drive last semester, and
restricted drive access to some of my software (I forget which ones...). Sure,
it gave me nearly 2x the space after compression, but it just wasn't worth it.
I figured that between losing important data and shelling out $350 for my
ST3144A, the IDE drive was a far better deal... As for the other program, I
don't know about it... The only one I've heard of otherwise is SUPERSTORE on
DR-DOS 6, and some people have complained about it, too.

Good luck, and have fun!

I've had pretty good luck with DR-DOS 6.0 and the SuperStore driver that
comes with it. I even use Windows 3.1 with it...

I get tired of reading responses like this. Stacker 2.0 is a solid
product, one which I have pushed and prodded and poked and tried every
way I could think of to bring it down. I'm not just a PC user, I'm a PC
torturer, and I could not make it fail unless what I did would have made
DOS itself fail, too.

Stacker is a fine product which is nevertheless blamed first whenever
some stupid user makes a mistake and loses some data.

I have been using SuperStore for about a year. I have had very few
problems with it. I did have problems with the version on DRDOS 6.
The way I set it up was to partiton my HD (200 mg) 10 meg & 190 meg.
I then compressed the 190 meg partition. I do it this way instead of
compressing the whole disk because the bootable compressed disk used
to go away with the DRDOS version - made me gun shy. Be careful not
to use any defragmenters other than the ones that come with the
compresion programs - they can wreak havoc...

I will have to agree with the latter response. Stacker is a very solid
peice of software. I have had no problems with compatibility with other
software and have not lost any data in the year that I have owned it.

I think it should be pointed out to users of Stacker that an SCHECK should
be performed quite frequently to ensure the integrity of the fat tables
that stacker keeps.

I would be curious to see the original poster explain exactly what happened
to his data. "That SOB almost took out some vital info ....." is not
much of a description of the software inadequacies.
