Maybe I should just call motorola abou this, but what the heck... I saw this double-page add for the '030, and burried in the copy was the phrase 'unix and ms-dos compatible' or something like that. Well, that's interesting, says I. I wonder what it means. Not having seen any discussion of a 8088 emulation mode in the '030 architecture I thought I'd ask if anyone has any idea what those marketeers have been smoking. -- Steve Nuchia | [...] but the machine would probably be allowed no mercy. uunet!nuchat!steve | In other words then, if a machine is expected to be (713) 334 6720 | infallible, it cannot be intelligent. - Alan Turing, 1947

Weirdly enough, nothing. Several companies sell software that lets you run MS/DOS applications, fresh out of the shrink-wrap, on other CPUs. I've seen them running on 68020s; hence, a 68020, at least, is "ms-dos compatible"....as are (at least) Clippers and MIPS R2000s (and surely more). A Turing Machine is probably "ms-dos compatible" with the right software & peripherals. :-) -- -john mashey DISCLAIMER: <generic disclaimer, I speak for me only, etc> UUCP: {ames, decwrl, prls, pyramid}!mips!mash OR mash@mips.com DDD: 408-991-0253 or 408-720-1700, x253 USPS: MIPS Computer Systems, 930 E. I think their referring to the PC software emulation program that will allow you to reduce the '030 to the speeds of an IBM AT (wow! what a feature :-). I'm not sure if it emulates a PC (8088) or AT (80286), but it does simulate the entire hardware architecture (video display, I/O ports, etc). -- ========================================================================== Michael H.
