The Macmilan and Free Press "Encyclopedia of Philosophy" says the key point of Representative Realism is "That perceiving proper is the direct awareness of sensa; perceiving external objects is redefined as perceiving sensa caused by them, and so all our awareness is strictly limited to sensa." Evidently this idea originated with Descartes and Locke but is very unpopular with philosophers, evidently because it is usually linked so strongly with unpopular ideas of Dualism. A similar idea, Critical Realism, seems similar but is supposedly slightly different. Steve Lehar and I are working on a paper that argues for a "Representative theory of perception". This theory is not dualistic at least as far as dualism is considered to include something other than brain states and not the "cartesian theater" at least as far as "another little observer sitting in the theater" is required. We are completely amazed at the lack of information and difficulty of finding writings about such a theory that seems so powerful and natural. If you are interestind in this kind of info, or if there is anyone that knows of writings or people that have any info either for or against this type of theory I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Also, if anyone knows of a good inexpensive way to search philosophy literature for such information this kind of info would also be greately appreciated. Please e-mail any responses since I am cross posting this to several groups and may miss a reply to one of the groups. Thank You Brent Allsop allsop@fc.hp.com
