It's part of their culture and doctrine. Ever read Al Q'uran? It states explicitly that Christians and Jews are to be respected as "People of the Book", i.e. part of the Judeo-Christian tradition, from Abraham, to Jesus, and culminating in Muhammed. Al Q'uran also states that "there is to be no compulsion in religion". Which is not to say that there aren't bigots in Islam, of course there are, just as there are in Christianity. But from the teachings of the Prophet, and certainly all through history, Islam has demonstrably been more tolerant of other faiths than most other religions. And no, I'm not a Muslim, just your everyday lapsed C of E anglo-aussie.

Honestly folks, can you keep this stuff out of the ng? Surely this type of 'discussion' is perfectly suited to a chatroom environment if that's your persuasion and is: a. not entertaining, b. not funny, c. not enlightening, d. often not intelligent and e. probably for most of us, not *at all* welcome here. Sadly aus.moto is degenerating more and more IMHO and is very quickly losing its appeal as a place where those of us who love to ride can communicate on the basis of our common interest. I'm sure many of you don't share my interests outside of motorcycling and I certainly am not interested in your thoughts on religion etc. in the context of this ng, so let's keep to the subject, yes? Hitler espoused similar ideas (though the words were different) about Jews. Jews were to blame for the economy, Germans being out of work etc etc. Had nothing at ALL to do with what the Keiser (however you spell it) had done to the nation prior to that or what the people after him had done. Jews were just different you see and that is all it took to make them the source of all the troubles as he saw it. You get a few bad Muslims that truly ARE bad these days and it is now the fault of EVERY Muslim because they look different, too. Getting sick and tired of repeating history myself. Hitler's already done this to death - literally. Let's at LEAST try to be original and do something entirely different. I know! Why don't we try accepting them and so long as they don't attempt to hurt you, leave them the hell alone? Just like to know - if a male jumps out of a dark alley and lunges at you with a knife, what do you notice first? Skin colour? Clothes he is wearing? The fact that he is holding the Bible or the Koran? How about the knife? Interesting fact - the knife doesn't notice what religion - or lack of it - of it's user. Why cant humans be a bit smarter than a blunt knife?

I dont care about their views - they dont oppress ME and I am female. The guy in my group is not required to answer for the actions of millions - and I dont find it unpalatable, simply rude. I respect his religion, and so long as I receive the same respect in return I am happy. The Muslims I know speak to non Muslims, male and female, with equal respect and I have nothing against them. They dont agree with terrorism either. In situations like this I subscribe to a sociological theory I read about a while back (can't recall the name of the guy, it might have been Huntington but that's probably wrong) that argued that any dominant culture will become cruel, violent, oppressive and intolerant of minority cultures - and the minority cultures, as a consequence, will become submissive, subservient and nominally tolerant of the majority culture. In other words, having the upper-hand leads the larger group to pressure the minorities to conform. This is particularly the case with religions which, for all their ecumenical feelgood claptrap about tolerating other sects, are mutually-exclusive belief systems that don't like competition. The problem here is religion, of course, as it so often is. --- Tourette's

It's when people start forming groups to give themselves some sort of exclusivity or sense of superiority over others that the trouble starts. Some comedian said once (Bill Hicks maybe?) that religious wars are just arguments over who has the better imaginary friend.

How can youse people tell who's Muslim and who's not?!!? Do they have halo or weird eyes or tattoos on the backs of their necks or something? I keep seeing all this "Muslims do this " and "Muslims do that " xenophobic rubbish but I'm blowed if I can figure out how youse know all these people are Muslims! How can you determine what religion a person is just by looking at them (or reading about them)? (And why is it important?). Is it like a funny-walk or secret-handshake or something? -- Clem [cynicism is all tool rampart]
