Did any body else get the Pincher Martin references? In fact, I
thought the "on the island" stuff basically ripped off Pincher Martin.

Not sure what you're talking about - i.e. is this survivor etc, however, I
can help you out with Pincher Martin.

"Pincher Martin" (written in 1956 - two years after "Lord Of The Flies") was
one of William Golding's novels and like "Lord Of The Flies" was about man's
struggle with nature and his ultimate urge to control it. The main
character,Christopher Martin was shipwrecked onto an island (I think it was
an island) and what happens when there are no longer any rules and control
appears to be unimportant. The time he was on the island was seven days and
to Martin, was a kind of symbolic purgatory..

I probably haven't helped much I'm afraid..
