[I KNOW this is OT, but I don't know where else to ask :-(((((( ] My problem is that Windows 98 keeps unnecessarily backing up obsolete versions of the registry. I'm trying to download a 140mb file using Download Accelerator Plus. This is my 4th attempt. DAP stores info on resuming downloads in the registry, so when the computer is restarted and the registry is backed up, everything gets erased and the download manager can't resume the download, and I have to start all over again. Not to mention that my website's customer database is stored in the registry too and so I'm getting emails from unhappy customers asking why their accounts have disappeared!!! Does anyone know a way to stop Windows 98 from continually backing up outdated versions of the registry??? This problem is driving me MAD!!!

I'd be very surprised if DAP actually stored that info in the registry. You should be able to stipulate in the options where it is stored. It also keeps the partly downloaded file in one of it's own folders. > Not to mention that my website's customer database is stored in the registry > too and so I'm getting emails from unhappy customers asking why their > accounts have disappeared!!! Again, I can't believe a customer database is being stored in the registry. > Does anyone know a way to stop Windows 98 from continually backing up > outdated versions of the registry??? This problem is driving me MAD!!! I think you may have other problems. Update to XP.

You can turn off scanreg (Start -> Run, type msconfig <Enter>, go to Startup and untick ScanRegistry) BUT BUT BUT BUT this is NOT NOT NOT NOT recommended as a long-term/permanent solution. Has happened to me before and I found the only solution was a "clean" re-install of Win98 - solved all problems. Also interesting results from a Google search about DAP - number of search results which indicate the extra "baggage" (adware and spyware) that comes with DAP. I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole!! You know it makes sense. steam3801

Storing your customer database in the registry? I actually don't have any spy/adware problems with DAP, I must be using an older version or something.

The CGI programming env I use, RapidQ, provides a direct interface to the registry through a QRegistry component 4. Its very EASY, FAST and it WORKS (when this backup problem isn't stopping it)!

It stores the partially downloaded file on the hard disk in a temporary folder, but the *location* of that file is stored in the registry (at HKLM\Software\Speedbit\Download Accelerator Plus\FileList to be exact). So when the registry is restored, the location is lost, and DAP reverts back to the (incorrect) default. Since it can't find the partially downloaded file, it starts the download from the beginning. It was late at night :-) I disabled the scanregw, but the problem results from the 'dos' version of the scanreg. There's the scanregw which is the windows one, but there's one which runs in dos (it kinda looks like ScanDisk) that I don't know how to disable.

Just disable the one showing in msconfig... should do the trick. But the fact this is happening at all shows that something is corrupting the registry so that the old version has to be restored at each restart. My money would be on that database program. IMHO, storing any of this kind of information in the registry is very very bad programming. Can't help you with the database... but for the download program... try something like Go!Zilla. What sort of program stores path information temporarily in the registry? A very slackly programmed one, thats what. What's the use of these download accelerators anyway? Surely a 56k modem only goes 56k. Surely hardware compression in the modem is about as good as it gets for speed? Surely people one day will stop being thick and ditch all these shitty things and give us computer techs a lot less to roll our eyes back about! Win98 is a losers OS anyway - a mere toy. Ivan

Download accellerators are quite handy, they'll make more than one connection to the site and/or download from different sites at the same time, thereby greatly decreasing the amount of time it takes to download a file. They can also be scheduled to download at certain times and keep track of partial downloads and resume at a later time.
