G'day everyone.

8020 and 9216 were finally hauled out of Gonninans last Monday 26th August
by Lachlin Valley rail.
All fingers were crossed when the shiny new pantograph touched the overhead
for the first time.
Very uneventfully the compressor started running,
the alternator started running and producing current for the auxiliary
equipment.
That was it, the car did exactly as it should no dramas.
No-one new exactly what would happen after such a massive re-build of this
power car
which probably should have been laid to rest forever.
After a minute or so there was a WHOOSH as the air-con units kicked in and
started cooling the cars.

So everything is running fine right down to the water coolers purring away
in both cars
even if they were empty.
Not all good news though when the car was attempted to move under it own
power
a problem became apparent in the pilot motor area and also in the line
switch area.
It was decided to send the cars back to Gonninans for these repairs to done
in a proper work area rather than the rail motor siding.
The opportunity would also be taken to do some fine tuning to bogie balance
and body twist tests as requested by SRA.

The cars returned to Gonninans Wednesday morning with the plans for them to
return back to the electric siding Broadmeadow next Monday the 2nd
September.
Hopefully trials will be run to Morriset next week with V96 8036-9036.
So let the debate begin
Was the re-build worth the cost and effort?
What will people think of the trailer car 9216 with it's suburban design
wall length seats?
If you look carefully you can see the various places where welds and cuts
and shuts have occurred to the body around the gondola and different side
fluting towards the front of the car.
Also look closely at all the original number locations.
You can still see the outlines of the markings DIM 8067 and DCT 9034.
To all of who know this power car will always be known as "The Glenbrook
Car."
To those who don't know they may be fooled into thinking that Cityrail is
spending big on car re-furbishments.

I have it on good authority that our Mr. Maikha (V-set) Ly has lots of
photo's to show us
Including some close up's of the Hexham cars.

So look for these new looking "Yellow doored" cars they could be in traffic
in the next few weeks.

Cheers for now,

Jono.

How is a body twist test conducted?

Some people would say "yes" and others will say "no". CityRail are short a few
V set power cars after previous accidents and no one builds them anymore, so
fixing it to was sort of logical.

On the other side, it is probably distasteful to rebuilt 8067 after such a
major accident in which people lost lives.

Where are the wall length seats located? In the upper and lower decks?

Excellent. A 2 car refurbished V-set. Should keep Maikha occupied for the next
few months. :)

True, but the same goes for the track (what has changed) and other
crashes like NR121, were as NR 3(?) a much higher percentage of the
occupants died and I assume every driver of NR 121 knows its history.
Few passengers will ever know about 8067's history.

At the end of the day, its bean counters and logistics who decide.

Rumour has it that NR121 is not usually run into NSW (if avoidable) out of respect
to the dead drivers and even then, on most other services it is usually put "into
the shafts" as no one wants to drive it.

Wouldn't there already have been an 8020 and 9216? Or were they written off
previously?

The DCM's started at 8021, being the next series of cars after DCF8001 to
DCF8008, which became part of the 92xx series cars when converted to
trailers or reburbished as trailers. These cars are now 9201 to 9215, being
a mix of DMT DDT and DFT's.

A twist test is easier than you think.
The corner wheels are literally jacked up or the body corners are raised off
the bogie frames packed and then lowered again causing the body to twist.
This is a little out of the league of a mere driver,
perhaps someone else knows exactly how.

As I said, Maikha has quite a few photos of these cars already so ask him to
post them.
The seats are loceated along the walls of the area which used to be the crew
compartment of 9034. As in the ex-control suburban cars

At the moment, I'm uploading the images to my webserver. More details
about the images and the images themselves will be online by tomorrow.

Yes, but something tells me they didn't go there under their own power, and
not while they were still in service :)

With the quality (TIC) of some of the new drivers to the Intercity sector,
one would not be surprised.

Yep, where a V-SET arrived into Goulburn, with its top completely
ripped off, and the sides damaged beyond repair............ incurred
when I tried to fit the V-SET through the tunnel at Picton (Or
somewhere there) :-)
